Born in Gongaga in 1977, Reno Hikaru grew up with only his older sister Kairi since he was five years old, when his mother died tragically in a horrible car accident. Kairi went on later to become a famous singer, while Reno was taken in by her producer (conveniently enough the late president of the Shin-Ra Electric Power Company) and soon completed his Turk training and became one of the then vice president Rufus Shinra's bodyguards. He has since then served several years serving both Rufus and his father, and when Rufus's father died, Reno insisted upon staying a Turk so he could continue to serve president Rufus as both bodyguard, police, home security, and whatever else Rufus may need.
