Depends.
Feed the Portal requires at least 100XP in all three categories, and you lose some of your abilities, but it shouldn't take long to get it back up there.
Ultimate Sacrifice requires you to be maxed out in all 3 categories, in which you will lose everything but your followers and mission count.
I don't sacrifice often, just feed the portal. It can be bothersome, especially this late in the game, to pull a sacrifice.

Same here, I think it's overrated.
Speaking of which, I saw earlier today a flash series using Mario and crew called Power Star. You should check it out if you haven't, it's preety good and dark.
