About

For years I had been hearing it. The sound when i was home alone, breathing behind my ear, a sniff here or there. Most times I ignored it, telling myself its nothing. As big of a cliché as it sounded, I would put it down to the wind, rain, imagination or anything of the sorts. Some days I would turn around, adamant that something or someone was there. Looking frantically around corners, into shadows, scared out of my wit. It seemed to morph, when I became used to small noises, there would be a slight cough, something louder. I swear one day I heard it say my name. I didn't think anyone was there, that would be silly, but I did glance around. It has been 2 years since I first recognized the voice. And now I hear it, everywhere, a whisper, a phrase, a scream. And although I can understand what it is saying, I don't understand what it means. "Cast it into the fire." it said, just then, clear as day. Useless words, sometimes I swear the voice is actually there, talking about me. I remember walking down a street, and hearing "It crosses the road" as if narrating my life. Yesterday, I heard “It’s going the wrong way” while driving to work. To tell the truth, it sounded like the voice pleading with me. Now it’s repeating “It will burn, in flaming torment”, louder and louder, almost shouting.

Its funny, it usually refers to me as “It”.
