About
Maria had been a simple fortune teller who read tarot cards from her parlor for extra money. As a child she had suffered a fall that left her face scarred. Ashamed but not vane she wore a mask to hide her deformity. The people in the fishing village thought she was strangely quiet and reclusive noticing that the only pleasure she had got was from her special kitten Coco. She had no friends. Her father had died, and her mother had disappeared when she was the tender age of 16.
There came a time when many people in the village became desperately ill. Maria took up her civic call and delivered home baked bread to those who where sick. Since she did not become ill, they blamed her and called her witch, chasing her from her home, tearing at her clothing and throwing rocks, and threatening to burn her and her cat. They lit fire to her home and destroyed her belongings.
The reaper looked on at the beautiful girl dressed in a tattered dress and clutching her shivering kitten.
As Maria slept, huddled into a cold and damp cave by the beach the reaper left her his first gift. A Sun Staff, that would illuminate and warm the cavern. He left no calling card, no instructions, only the glowing warm Staff planted firmly into the sand, and a Whispered promise that he would always be near should she need his help.-
Maria’s eyes popped open as the light spread. And in her daze she saw a large dark shadow disappear. She rubbed her eyes and thought this a dream.
