Even something so apparently unchangeable as our collective past can be shaped and modified by individuals. We usually think of hisotry as a fixed, unalterable collection of social events that occured long ago; only in science fiction can one "go back" and change history. No one would question that King John of England signed the Magna Carta in 1215 or that the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776 or that the Civil War ended in 1865 or that John F Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, or that hijackers flew passenger jets into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.Although such historical events themselves don't change, their meaning and relevance can. Consider the celebration in 1992 of the 500th anniversary of Columbus's voyage to the Americas. For generations, American schoolchildren have been taught that Columbus's 1942 "discovery" represented a triumphant step forward for Western civilization. However, increasing sensitivity to the social value of all racial and ethnic groups and the acknowledgement of their past prosecution forced many people to reconsider the historical meaning of Columbus's journey. In fact, some historians now consider it and what it led to one of history's most dismal examples of wanton and deadly prejudice.
Society is a "bottom-up" phenomenon. It might best be regarded as a work in progress, a succession of events, a flow of interchanges among people.
