Abilities: Shinsou's sealed form is that of a wakizashi--a short-bladed Japanese sword. When released, its blade extends at an extremely rapid rate, essentially "shooting" the point forward like a projectile.
Ichimaru Gin is the former sanbantai taichou of the Gotei 13 of Soul Society. His overall appearance is not so normal: his eyes are constantly slitted (earning him the nickname "foxface" wink , he is unusually thin, and he bears unusual silver hair. He also keeps a wide smile most of the time, which he has only been known to wipe off on rare occasions (his eyes are blood red in the anime; however, he is illustrated with blue eyes in one of the color images of the manga, so which of these two is the correct color is unclear), and speaks in a distinct Osaka dialect.
Not much is known about Ichimaru's prior history, except that he once saved 10th Division Lieutenant Matsumoto Rangiku's life. They have been friends since then. Hence, Matsumoto is one of the few people Gin seems to truly care about. (It is also noted that upon learning that Rangiku did not remember when her birthday was, he designated the day the two met as the former’s birthday.)
Gin served as the lieutenant of 5th Division Captain Aizen Sousuke before becoming captain of the 3rd Division and that he became captain at the same time as Kuchiki Byakuya. His lieutenant was Izuru Kira, before he, Aizen, and Tousen Kaname escape to Hueco Mundo with the help of the Menos Grande and are deemed traitors to Soul Society. Before leaving, Gin tells Matsumoto he wouldn't have minded being held a little while longer, and also apologizes to her.
