'Ello, folks! You can call me "Foofy." I'm a 17 year old with too much time on my hands... Which is much the only reason I come on Gaia anymore... To chat with old and new friends when there's nothing else going on... That's it, though, because I hate what the site has become.

I've been keeping reptiles for a little over two years now, and pride myself on being a major know-it-all on the subject. The current head-count comes in at 25 snakes, a bearded dragon (lizard), and a tortoise. The break-down of that is...
5.13 Corn snakes, 0.1 Taiwan Beauty Snake, 1.1 BCI Boa constrictors, 0.0.1 Kenyan Sand Boa, 1.1 Ball Python, 1.0 Rosy Boa, 1.0 Bearded Dragon, 0.1 Russian Tortoise.
The 1.2.3 thing is a gender thing. Male.Female.Unsexed. i.e., I have 8.16.1 snakes... 8 male snakes, 16 female snakes, and 1 unsexed snake. The beardie is male, and the tortoise is female. =3
I do rescue work on the side. Not a lot, but if it comes to my attention that there is a reptile in need, I will do what I can. Most often, that involves taking the animal into my care. I don't often
ask for these rescues--their owners ask me. This is what happened with the beardie, the female Ball python, and the tortoise.
It also so happens that, most of the time, I only find out about them when the person no longer wants them... Which is sad, because that's usually when they're in the worst shape. After the lizard stops moving around or eating because its bones are jelly, or when the tortoise has such horrible diarrhea that it and its too-small tank are just covered in poo. It's terribly depressing, and extremely unfair to the animals.
Since I'm on the subject, I implore any/all Gaians that so happen to have a small animal (whether it be a reptile, a frog, a rat, or a guinea pig) to make SURE you're doing it right. Google your animal and read as much as you can to make sure you have your enclosure and feeding regime correct. Join a forum where you can get one-on-one advice from experts. Hell, you're more than welcome to PM me with any questions... I don't care, just make sure you're doing it right. These animals need much better care than they usually get..
And, YES! That goes for the small furry things, too. The girl who gave me the (her brother's) Tortoise? She had no idea, until I found out and directed her to
http://guineapigcages.com/, that her two guinea pigs needed more space than the itty bitty store-bought "guinea pig cage" (aka deathtrap) she was housing them in. Most pet rats are kept in too-small cages and fed poor diets. And it's all because people (people just like YOU) are more likely to follow the pet store's usually extremely poor advice and buy whatever shitty, over-priced product they are handed by the same than they are to so much as google care for their pet.
