Until you pointed it out, I never realized "self gratification" sounded so questionable! It's like "masticate": sounds inappropriate but it isn't! Though if you wanted, you could make either one sexual. That's the fun of English: making things that aren't sexual sound like they are

Ah, but if we were not in the process of destroying ourselves, what would be the fun of seeing how far we can push the metaphorical envelope before it decides to push back? Though there are times when a simpler, more oblivious lifestyle is desirable, if we were to return to that time, would we not miss all the advances that have pushed us so close to our self-induced apocalypse?

Hm, I see the fun of tangents now! I should adopt those into my daily speech
