Rock Armor is a group buff that only affects other crew members. yes, it should work. Make sure he buffs you when you attack something, not before or after the kill. Has to be during the fight.

Okay, this isn't too difficult to fix.
He himself cannot solo now, since he has no damage capabilities, right?
As long as he's in a crew, and buffs/heals someone else in the crew while they're fighting a monster, he should also 'get' the kill.
It will be a long, slow grinding process, but if he continues to buff/heal others in his crew, he should eventually get a few more rings to drop from enemies. Hopefully a damage ring, so he can solo again.
