I thought the same thing when I watched it. I was expecting the usual "lets talk down to our audience while we discuss fashion, boyz, and sell merchandise!" girl series. The characters don't have typical personalities, and I really like how the show looks. I've heard that a lot of people enjoyed it as well, even people that never liked MLP in the first place.
I can't wait to see more episodes of it, although I'd have to catch/find it online since my college lacks The Hub channel. sad
