If you want a non-spoilery explanation summary of it, basically they explain that the swords are not only their souls but the means to get the power revolution. They are also indications of their characters and even their fighting styles.

When I started watching it I came into it knowing about the lgbtq representation (but not to what extent) and also knowing it had weirdness and metaphorical stuff from what I heard. Once I got done with the series it was only the beginning cause once you see the Utena movie... I'll just say it really puts a period to the entire series as a whole XD
