Or at least if they made a rule of it, I'm sure they'd dismiss people who'd used it before it was official.

Not necessarily. Haven't you noticed how some people know when they glow? I really haven't wondered how they know.
But they can tell the exact time & if they'll drop items or not.

Yah. I've seen a few people with loaded tanks list how much they spent & how close they are to making that money back.
But they're usually half or less gained back...
I don't know if they just started trying to gain it back or what, so I can't really know if it's a moneymaker or not.
