Being An American
By Alarika Kegley

Being an American has many advantages, but like everything, it also has some disadvantages. In America, you are free; free to be yourself, and free to say what’s on your mind. That’s the way it’s always been. But if you really think about it, that’s not the way it always works out.

When you try to be yourself, there are always so many people who don’t except you, there are so many people who believe they are greater than you because of their wealth, religion, and sometimes education and race.

They say that America is diverse, a “melting pot”, where everyone is brought together and united. But that’s not always the case, very many people aren’t respected and not treated as well by everyone because of their race, religion, or color. I’m not saying that everyone in America is this way, but I certainly can name a few.

Also, ( by the way I’m not trying to be negative) but you aren’t always free to say what you feel, you can’t express your feelings toward authority without getting in trouble. But yet they can tell you how they feel about you, which is most of the time not a good thing.

Also, Americans have very much hate and violence, I can’t recall a day where I haven’t heard about shootings. Why are some people like this? Of course people aren’t always going to get along, but I can honestly say that I’d feel safer in shark infested water than a dark street in Philadelphia. But, America is still young, maybe someday we really might be able to be in peace, maybe someday all the prejudice will disappear, and everyone will respect each others rights and opinions. It will take a lot to turn it around, but maybe we can do it. We all have freedom to an extent, and we can speak our minds, to an extent, maybe that’s a good thing, maybe it’s not. But until America settles it’s differences, until its citize
