Yes, yes it does. The emphasis on sight and knowledge wouldn't be so bad if it didn''t result in the emphasis of lack of sight and stupidity, and pretty much everything that's bad.

You know the beggar in that one movie? It doesn't matter which movie, because he always appears to be blind. Yeah, annoying.

"Poor. Blind. 25ยข Please." or something equally stupid.

It's a big thing in the disabled community, this underestimation (even by "our own" wink . Parents are a horrible addition to the problem. I actually loathe the word "disabled," "handicap" or any such word that suggests that the "problem" is with the person and not how society is set up. What I have to go through sometimes is infinitely frustrating. I am not alone in thinking that... you know what. Let me shut up before I go off again. Oh, wait. Damn. Sorry.

And thanks for showing interest in cutting off the word, though it's difficult. I still find myself at least thinking it sometimes. And it's even harder to stop drawing the connection between sight and knowledge (e.g. "I see" for "I understand" or "Don't you see?" or some equivalent. Buuttt I take it kinda far because that's how much it annoys me. It helps to have alternatives. Saying what you really mean, like "mindless" or "ignorant" instead of "blind".

I know you didn't mean offense. No one ever does, but that's because no one seems to understand this connection people make with sight and knowledge. Like you said: He chooses not to see (i.e. understand) what's going on, when sight (in the literal sense) has nothing to do with it.

I'm pretty sure you're not interested in a discussion of this (I wouldn't be either if I were you). Heh, you don't have to refrain from anything. Hell, if you don't understand something, then I'd rather you not "blindly" refrain from doing it. That does nothing in the longrun but prolong your life.

Sorry. I am blind (err... enough. I have 5% of vision) and I hate when people use "blind" as a synonym for "stupid," (e.g. "If you're too blind to understand that then there's no help for you" wink or connect sight to knowledge (thus connecting lack of sight to ignorance). I know first-hand (as do some of my friends) how stupid people think we are just because we can't see (and I know it's not purposeful but it gets annoying when people yank me across the street because they don't think I can cross it by myself, or when people yell at me that grass is in front of me when I can figure it out with my cane or my dog, or when people wonder how I can brush my teeth by myself or other stupid s**t). Actually, I prefer when people ask me questions (so they can learn about it) and when people wait to see if I can do something (instead of just assuming that I can't do it. Maybe not merely assuming. If they don't know then they don't know. Let's say acting on that assumption. Yanking me across the street instead of seeing if I need help first). If you're an outsider, then I may seem overly-sensitive, but I think I can at least be annoyed =)
