Yuna and her partners, Rikku and Paine, are members of the Gullwings, a merry band of sphere hunters. They journey throughout Spira in their airship, the Celsius, searching for valuable spheres. Images, sounds and other data can all be stored on these remarkable artefacts. Yuna was not always a sphere hunter having been a high summoner two years before. She successfully achieved something neither her father Braska, nor any other high summoner before her could accomplish: she delivered Spira from the threat of Sin, once and for all.

She was accompanied on her pilgrimage by her guardians: Wakka, Lulu, Kimahri, Auron, Rikku and "him..." Tidus. When their quest was over, Tidus disappeared just as mysteriously as he had arrived. This broke Yuna's heart, even though Tidus was apparently nothing more than a dream made flesh, a construct of the Fayth's imagination. These days, Yuna takes life much less seriously, though more seriously than the fun-loving Rikku. Even in the current period of calm, many of Spira's inhabitants still have the highest respect for their saviour, who they call "Lady Yuna".

Motivation of her Journey.
_____________________________________________________

Yuna is encouraged by her secret hope to find Tidus, her long lost love, on her journey. It seems only this and nothing else matters to her; it's her unique motivation, her inner strength. For that, she undertakes a lot more things and has to make sharp decisions at the right moment several times. She is ready to do anything to reach her goal and acts a bit more egoistically like she doesn't care if anything happens to her as long as she finds her answers.

"I felt so close... As if all the answers lay just down that hole. I just wanted to let go and jump inside..."
She often acts like she's talking to Tidus, if he were here beside her too. For Yuna, Tidus is not dead. She hasn't made his mourning; he has just vanished from the real world. It's by keeping repeating to herself that she will find him back that she keeps going on.
"Do you recognize this place? It's the port at Kilika! They've made all this progress thanks to the help of the Youth League."

"How can this be... all I want is to see you again!"

The Influence of her Past.

But all in all, after these two years of Calm, she can't go on in life. It's hard for her to continue while she still hopes that she would find back Tidus one day, which was her reason for joining the Gullwings. Heading toward the future means forgetting about the shards of the past and Yuna isn't ready to forget all these things.

"It was just the seven of us back then, in this, our special place. I wanted to keep it just the way it was, secret from everybody. So much for that."
She has this melancholic way of observing and analysing the world. In fact, she doesn't act like a teenager of her age, although I doubt she ever acted this way. When they were travelling in Spira two years ago, Yuna had the same outlook, if not a little more sheltered. Tidus said she was looking at places as if she was saying "goodbye" to everything that she knew. Yuna wanted to change her mind by becoming a sphere hunter but she still remains the same inside, even if she pretends to act more free.
"Two years ago, we cast aside something important in this place... Our false hope."

"Yuna: This blows!
Rikku: Don't talk like that, Yunie!
Yuna: But you just said that!"

Show Must Go On.

On one hand she wants to get rid of these painful memories and all her traditions, and limits that she still carries from her past as a Summoner ("If I don't watch myself, I go back to thinking like I did when I was a summoner..." wink but on the other hand she doesn't want to wipe them all away, because even though the memories are painful, their was still laughter in her journey.

"Yuna: He was my first Aeon...
Paine: I see.
Yuna: I grew up on Besaid, and became a summoner here. (And that's when I first met you.) if anything happened to this place...
Wakka: Yuna... [...] Memories are just memories in the end, ya? If the fiends return, we'll go ahead and burn it.
Yuna: I suppose it's for the best. Just... tell me before you do it. I'd like to be there."
For her, Zanarkand, Besaid, Kilika, every town she went through is a place connected to the past; places, things, people that reminds her of Tidus, or her pilgrimage with her friends. She is not ready for this, but realizes at the same time she must face the reality, the present and the future. Realize that he probably won't be by her side to support her or when she'd whistle at the seaside.
"Maybe these things really were connected. But it's true... you weren't there. What if I stayed a sphere hunter, but you never came..."

"I started out looking for you... But in the end I might never find you. I think I really did want to get out again, to find my future. Even... even if you're not in it."

Synthesis.
___________________________________________________

Yuna may have changed a lot in her appearance but deep inside herself still lies the little Yuna we knew from "Final Fantasy X". Really, she hasn't changed much, and she still has faith in her dearest valors such as honesty, truth, friendship, and love. What makes her a lot different is her maturity, and her open-mind, which has never stopped growing since she became a summoner. She had tough experiences in the past and it will remain engraved in her memory forever: the fact that she was used without her own knowledge, the will to live she had neglected to save Spira, the loss of parents, friends... and first love. Everything has been really harsh and she made her way out of this to become stronger.

Two years after Sin's death, numerous groups with different ideologies have formed throughout Spira. While Yuna is often asked to join them in the hopes of bolstering their political presence, she chose to become a hunter of ancient treasures, commonly known as "sphere hunters". The story begins as Yuna, Rikku and Paine recover Yuna's stolen dressphere from the Leblanc Syndicate. Although Yuna's quest is to find clues that may lead her to Tidus, much of the storyline follows the clash of the factions that have established themselves in the time since the coming of the Eternal Calm, and the uncovering of hidden legacies from Spira's ancient history.

The Vegnagun.

As the story unfolds, the hostilities between the Youth League and New Yevon build to a head. In the meantime, the Gullwings discover an ancient sphere containing images of an enormous machina weapon called "Vegnagun" that was secretly buried beneath the city of Bevelle. The weapon has enough power to threaten all of Spira, and, moreover, it is revealed that Vegnagun is unable to distinguish friend from foe once activated. The Gullwings then join forces with the Leblanc Syndicate to investigate the underground areas of the city in an attempt to destroy the machine before it can be used by either side in the upcoming conflict. However, discovering a large tunnel recently dug into the floor of the weapon's chamber, they realize that Vegnagun has apparently been moved to the Farplane, located at Spira's core.

Disagreements between Spira's factions are soon punctuated further after the disappearance of Baralai, Nooj and Gippal — the leaders of New Yevon, the Youth League and the Machine Faction respectively. Returning to the underground areas of Bevelle, the Gullwings discover the missing faction leaders discussing Vegnagun and learn that the machine's artificial intelligence allows it to detect hostility and to respond by activating itself and fleeing. Additionally, it is revealed that Nooj had come to Bevelle with the intention of destroying Vegnagun previously, prompting it to flee to the Farplane. One then learns that Paine had once been friends with all three men, assigned to be their sphere recorder while they were candidates for the Crimson Squad, an elite group intended to be assigned leadership of Crusader chapters across Spira.

A Wandering Soul.

Two years earlier in a cave beneath Mushroom Rock Road called "the Den of Woe", just before the failed Operation Mi'ihen, the squad's final exercise was conducted. Within the cave, the various squad candidates were swarmed by pyreflies and driven to kill one another. The only survivors were Paine, Baralai, Gippal and Nooj, who were themselves targeted by the Yevon order afterward when they revealed having seen images of Vegnagun while in the cave. Soon after, Nooj shot his surviving comrades and left them to die, severing the friendship the group had with one another. However, at this time, it is revealed that he was not acting of his own accord when he shot them. The feelings that drove the squad members to kill one another are revealed to have been the despair of Shuyin, who died 1000 years earlier. Before the four survivors could leave the cave, the spirit of Shuyin — requiring a host in order to interact with the world physically — had possessed Nooj, and later forced him to shoot his comrades. In the time since, Shuyin had been subtly goading Nooj on a subconscious level, coercing him to approach Vegnagun so that he could use Nooj's body to control it.

Nooj's will was too strong for him to be completely controlled, and his desire to destroy the large machina prompted it to flee. Now desiring a new host, Shuyin leaves Nooj's body and possesses Baralai's, pursuing Vegnagun to the Farplane. Nooj and Gippal follow in pursuit, asking Yuna to keep things under control on the surface. In doing so, Yuna must fight and defeat each of her aeons from "Final Fantasy X", their spirits now corrupted by Shuyin's despair on the Farplane. During this mission, Yuna falls into the Farplane and meets Shuyin, who mistakes her for a woman named "Lenne". Feeling affection toward him that is not her own and finding herself unwilling to move away from him, she listens as Shuyin describes how he "awoke" after he had died, alone and unable to find Lenne. He then expresses anger that Spira's citizens have not yet come to understand the heartache that war can cause, and reveals that he has developed a plan to use the old, but still operational Vegnagun to destroy all of Spira, ending the possibility of there ever again being a war. In so doing, he believes that he will be making the world a better place.

A Tragic Past.

1000 years ago, Shuyin was a famous blitzball player in the high-tech metropolis of Zanarkand, and the lover of a popular songstress and summoner — Lenne. The two lived during Zanarkand's war with the more powerful Bevelle, and during the course of the war, Zanarkand ordered all summoners to the front lines, separating the couple. Believing that Lenne would die in battle, Shuyin decided that the only way to save her was to infiltrate Bevelle, commandeer Vegnagun, and use it to destroy Zanarkand's enemies. However, Lenne perceived Shuyin's intentions, and — unwilling to allow him to take the lives of many others for her sake — followed him. When she caught up to Shuyin in Bevelle, he had only just begun to operate Vegnagun's control panel, an organ integrated into its head. Before he could use the giant cannon located in its mouth to destroy the city, Lenne asked him to stop. Shuyin did as she asked, but a group of Bevelle soldiers arrived a moment later and shot the couple. Fatally injured, Lenne failed to tell Shuyin that she loved him before they died.

Over the course of the following 1000 years, Shuyin's despair and resentment over his failure to save Lenne bonded to pyreflies and caused him to constantly experience the anguish of that moment. Over time, his despair became so powerful that it began acting on its own, and he came to believe that — in addition to helping the world — he would fade away with Lenne if he destroyed Spira.

A Thousand Words.

Now with an understanding of Shuyin's hatred for war, Yuna manages to return to the surface and the Gullwings organize a concert to which everyone in Spira is invited, supporters of the Youth League and New Yevon alike. Additionally, the Songstress dressphere worn by Yuna is revealed to be comprised of Lenne's memories, resulting in a sphere screen projecting them to everyone in attendance during the concert. Witnessing images of Shuyin and Lenne's last moments, Spira's citizens begin to understand the unproductive nature of their disagreements. Yuna understands that it was because of Lenne's memories that Shuyin had mistaken her for Lenne and she had felt affection toward him.

Together Again.

Although the factional fighting has ceased, Shuyin has nearly carried out his plan to use Vegnagun's cannon to destroy the planet from beneath its surface. Joining forces with the Leblanc Syndicate once again, the Gullwings make their way to the Farplane and find Gippal and Nooj already battling Vegnagun. Working together, they manage to disable the giant machina before its cannon can fire at Spira. Finally confronting Shuyin, Lenne's consciousness emerges from the Songstress dressphere and convinces him to abandon his mission and be at rest. Thanking Yuna, Lenne guides Shuyin's spirit to peace on the Farplane.

Subsequently, the fayth once located in Bevelle appears before Yuna and thanks her as well. He then asks her if she would like to see "him" again. Should Yuna replies "yes", the fayth locates Tidus' scattered pyreflies and sends them to Besaid, where they reform. Thus, when Yuna returns home, she is finally reunited with Tidus.

IN-DEPTH » Costumes

Here are the descriptions of Yuna's two main Dresspheres: gunner and songstress designed by Tetsuya Nomura. More information can eventually be found in the cosplay section.

Gunner
The gunner costume is a drastic change compared to her former kimono. It's typical from the Al Bhed style and from Rikku's liking. Since Al Bheds and machina are now tolerated in Spira, Yuna doesn't have to fear showing her true origins anymore. But for her, this costume would rather be a symbol of this new "freedom" than a will to provoke people. It's also a way for her to give up everything related to her past job, especially the bad memories of being victimized as a summoner. All in all, it's just so easier to move around and jump with this costume than a kimono.

Yuna wears an ivory close-fitting top composed of three layers: the smooth upper, the ruffled middle and the light pink embroided bottom tied under the middle. It has a large V low-cut decorated by the black Zanarkand Abes symbol, reminiscent of Tidus. The top is linked to a light pink hood by thin ivory straps. On top of her black/navi blue hot pants, Yuna wears a side gipsy skirt composed of three layers, the one underneath being always longer than the one on top. They all start by a gradient from dark blue to light blue and end by a thin turquoise double line with a white part. The side skirt is tied at her hips to her right by some long fringes.

She has kept two accessories from her summoner uniform which are the silver necklace and the wood earring. With these, she wears a long tail wrapped in a red ribbon at the base of her hair/neck, two yellow armbands with black crossed laces, a thin double yellow rope around her waist, a black wrist bracelet on her left arm, a pouch with a cowboy-cut on the flap tied to a beige belt, a pair of small-heeled black boots with white laces and big silver and golden guns decorated by a fan-shaped hammer.

Songstress
The songstress costume is a variation of the gunner outfit composition-wise. Its flowing design might also remind you of Rinoa Heartilly's from "Final Fantasy VIII".

Yuna wears a prussian blue close-fitting top decorated by ruffles all around. The ruffles and the first layer of the side drapery is a one and only fabric. They are neither plain white nor grey-blue but blended. The top of the fabric is the white part of the gradient while the bottom is the grey-blue part. The slightly transparent drapery is composed of two other layers underneath going from front to back, folded in staggered rows. You might need a few tries before getting the gist of the pattern. Over her black boxer shorts, Yuna wears a black pleated lace mini-skirt; on her arms, transparent glossy blue sleeves tied by wrist and elbow black bands.

She has almost the same accessories as her gunner outfit : necklace, earring and tail. With these, she wears two black crossed laces on her arms, a thin blue belt, a micro, and a pair of knee-high small-heeled camel boots with two different fabrics over it: a chestnut one covering almost everything but the back and a maroon one covering the front of the foot.
