you need to buy a bug catching net at the fishing store
http://www.gaiaonline.com/gaia/store.php?id=83dc2 (this is the link to the store)
to equip the net: go to towns, on the bottom right hand will be a shadowed person, and these two buttons, click the one that resembles the net, you are now equipt with the net, find a bug and be as near as possible and click the bug and it will show a bubble of a bug you caught.
