I was going to make this a thread in the General Discussion, but then I thought naaah, it would be way better to make it here. So I hope I get some responses! ^.^ I'm really interested to know where people get their usernames from. Is it something that describes you, the name of a character (that one's popular among writers and rpers, in my experience), or just something you thought sounded catchy and unique? Did you find that your original username was taken and have to edit it in some way, with underscores or dots, or just change it altogether?
Another interesting trend that I've noticed on Gaia is that the people who have the more interesting usernames are usually the literate ones. I very rarely find that literate users have usernames like 'shippo1181' or even have numbers at all. Does anyone else think that's the case, and if so, why?
In response to my own question, my username comes from my story character and alter ego, The Enchanted Sleeper. Gaia was the first place I used it, and since then, I've used it on most forums and other websites that I've joined where there isn't a character limit.

I think the origins of my username should be pretty obvious razz
I've met some highly literate and intelligent people with numbers in their names. Sometimes the real name you want is just already taken.

I'm trying to remember...how I came up with this one...
I had a variety of other AIM names and junk that were similar to "SleepingShrew," and when I was applying for Gaia, I thought, "What would be a badass name?" See, this whole thing started with a local band my friend dragged me to see. I can't remember their name, or what they looked like, or anything. They just bullied me into buying their CD, which my other friend promptly took because I thought it was complete bullcrap.
But anyway.
Their "featured" song on that CD was "Narcoleptic Turtle." And I thought, "ZOMG THAT'S AN AWESOME NAME!" So I got "HibernatingGecko" for some other accounts, and when I got to Gaia, I just...wanted...something...different? So I picked "Shrew" because shrews are totally awesome and I'm like one in a sense, and then I came up with "Sleeping" because I like sleeping all the time and it's funny because real shrews don't sleep much.
So voila, that's how I came up with SleepingShrew. Kind of boring, but...I like this name...MOOHAAHAAHAA

>> Only the blackest of heartsI chose my nickname because of the term: Double Negative. I have been known to use double negatives a lot in real life (or like... triple negatives) and it also expresses the fact that I am a negative person, just naturally. In addition, I just sorta wanted a name with the double ii, lowerUPPER, and some brackets/space.
My older username: lurkindarkness - stemmed from the fact that most people say Lurkin' rather then lurking - so I decided it would have two meanings: lurk IN darkness, or LURKIN' darkness - depending on how you choose to see it.
Once again, dark connotations. Can feel the purest of love <<

I like dandelions cause you can make wine out of em? And they grow EVERYWHERE and they're quite pretty. <3
And then I'm quite pedantic at times~, so. "pen", i supose, comes out of the fact that I'm only really pedantic in my writing. x3 It doesn't come out right when I say it, it seems~...

Meilin came from a favorite TV show that used to play. Cardcaptors for anyone who remembers it. Man I wish they'd play it again.... Well, Nokomis was just a name I found looking through a baby name book. It had an oriental quality to it, so I liked it. It is actually a Native American name that means "grandmother" I beleive. It sounded really cool with Meilin, so that's why I chose it.

Sen.i.Sok. (Old Korhesion, meaning literally "The Wise.")
Sen - Old Korhesion, also translated as Sey and Sin, means literally "The." The term is translated exactly to the English Language, with no difference or variation in meaning.
i - Korhesion, A connecting letter, translated into English. This is used to connect an Article Adjective and a normal Adjective being used as a Noun, or to connect an Article Adjective to a Noun.
Sok - Old Korhesion, Adjective, translated only as Sok. Pronounced "Soke," this word can mean either "Wise" or "Intelligent," but is more often used sarcastically than literally.
________________
My name's in Old Korhesion, a language I came up with for one of the Races in a novel I never finished. I rewrote it again as Korhesion, then again as New Korhesion. So there are different language variations for the entire race, based primarily on what region of the world they lived in.
It means "The Wise," though it's not extremely descriptive of my actual personality. It's the name of a Korhesion Seer in the story, and it sounded cool.

Wow, seems like someinteresting places to get online names. It shows what influences people and gives a hint of their personality.
For me, the username came from an online search of what my real name is in Japanese. I'm not sure if it's right, but I've used it in a lot of roleplays I've done with friends and it stuck as an alias. I think it's rather boring, and I have another account called 'hostamaki' or 'lonelyprince' from Ouran Host Club. I love that show. biggrin
By the way, this is my first post on here so, hello! 4laugh

No fantastic story behind mine; it's the same as one of my emails, which I got from my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh character: Seto Kaiba. People can make a few nicknames from it; kaiba-boy, kaiba, kai... My favorite would have to be "Miss Kaiba". Yeah, I have some good mental images from that one. ^_^
I don't think you can judge how well a person roleplays by their username, though. My name isn't very original, and I'm literate-advanced. On the other hand, I've seen a few roleplayers with creative names who were horrible

This was originally a mule.
I wanted something poetic, something that linked warrior with human.
Thus, Wounded Glory.
