GOALS & Judging
Penden is the sole judge. eek
What you should make:
1. One map of a large area equivalent to a large country or a continent 2. Two maps of a smaller area. These maps may be of the same area or two different areas. One must be the equivalent of a small town or larger city. The other may be of a building or other minutiae.
In one of your three maps, you must include:
1. Symbols or words to indicate important features. 2. Evidence of both the Oll and the Lupi somewhere in the three maps 3. At least one prominent natural or man-made physical feature, such as a statue, a funny-looking mountain face, etc. 4. At least one natural resource
What your entry will be "graded" on:
1. Readability. If there are words on your map, I need to be able to read them. If there are borders or other symbols on your map, I need to be able to see those clearly as well. 2. Discernibility. Words and symbols need to be intuitive or concisely explained. If you pack your map with too many details, it will be hard to decipher as the viewer tries to discern which details are the most relevant. 3. Visual attractiveness. Play to your strengths. If you are bad at coloring, turn in a black and white map with some other artistic feature as your prominent attraction. 4. WTF factor. I should be able to relate your maps to the "inspiration" literature that I have provided. Be creative about how your map relates to this literature, but also make it clear that it does indeed relate. I want to see that you have thought about what these culture(s) would have access to, what they might produce or use in terms of structures such as buildings and monuments, and their relation to other peoples and cultures in terms of trade, war, and size. 5. Creativity. The whole point of this contest is to be creative, and the prose that I have started you off with is vague in many aspects for that very reason.

YOUR MATERIALS -------------------- ie, the information about the world that you will need for your map
The Lupi & Ikle m Oll
Today the Lupi are a small ethnic group incorporated into the nation of Ikle m Oll. The term that the Oll use for the Lupi is derived from the name of the former federation of loosely associated nation states that, only a hundred and fifty years ago, officially disolved under the economic pressures of Oll imigrants flooding the continent of Ai. Through a relatively peaceful take over, the language and culture of the Lupi was broken into pockets, of which most have acultured completely into the Oll. The village of Pineit remains as one of the few pockets were the language of the Lupi is still actively used, and in fact the language of Oll is not seriously taught to inhabitants until adolescents, when it is required by national laws.
The Oll have surrounded the Lupi not just with a different language and a change of law, but also with a harrying propulsion of technological advancement, inspired by prominent theologians who believed in a rational world whose inhabitants could be predicted and controled with the knowledge and manipulation of the laws of physics. In more recent years, sociologists and anthropologists studying the vanishing Lupi have ignited an obsession with mysticism among social scientists and the average citizen. The Lupi still perform religious ceremonies significantly different in form from religious meetings still found within the Oll. Besides this and their use of their own language, the Lupi are not so much different from the Oll that they cannot travel outside of their protective villages and even attend formalized education and regular employement among the Oll. However, many Lupi resent the fast-paced life of the Oll, which seems to constantly threaten their own way of life.
The Lupi have been prosperous under their new rulers, for although they keep to themselves in many ways, they are quite happy to contribute to the economy of Ikle m Oll. The Lupi are praised for their agricultural prowess, whereby they maintain sustainable farming and husbandry practices that do not damage the land, and which maintain the numbers of heritage species which have now become delicacies. Many of the Lupi practices have been incorporated into Oll farms in the last fifty years.
The technology of the Ikle m Oll includes a "train" that "jumps" from one planet to another, recently completed to allow travel between two alien planets which have been in audio/transmission contact for almost seventy years. It is not clear to regular citizens whether this technology was invented by their own people who whether significant help from the aliens was required. Have fun with the level of technology; you have some leeway here.

A map. I'm not sure I understand your question. Many GMs use maps to help with their RPs. Maps also appear frequently on the inside covers of successful fantasy books. A map can tell you things about the story and setting in a very unique way.
Did that answer your question? heart

Ok, I've got the bit of prose you'll be using for your maps. Any comments on it, whether its long enough, should contain more info, etc., would be great.
Finishing up the rules and allocating prizes, now. The contest will start after I'm done figuring out those two things.

The rules are done. Is any thing confusing?
And how does May 8th sound for an ending time? (my last day of exams) Or should it be longer?
Also...I should advertise this puppy, but I'm having real trouble figuring out where/how sweatdrop I wanted to place it in the Barton OOC but a mod there told me it sounded like it should go in the art forums. crying But can I advertise in art forums or would the contest have to BE there? And why can't it go in the BT OOC??? Ack I'm so confused!
