I thought he was really boring in the beginning
and I hated him when he reverted back into Angelus.
I suppose it's similar to what James Marsters said in an interview
that we live vicariously through Buffy.. because after Angel has sex with her and says such awful things I grew to despise him.

I hate angel.
He just annoyed me.

Well let's see.... for the first season I pick Angel. Oh wait: that's only because Spike wasn't in the first season. So, in that case SPIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, here's the real question: do you mean in general, or in a certain way?
Both have their strong points, though these points presented themselves at different moments. (But if you mean in general, I'd have to go with Spike, too - he's just a mite funnier than Angel. Always has been. heart )
