10: Misc. Hello and welcome to the quest thread for Mercury and Mizrua, my idea for Wings of a Dream. Below you will see three files for both Mercury and Mizura, this is because I am not sure which file will be permissible by the shop owners. It is also in case I do get a custom slot but perhaps cannot afford the complexity of File 1 and so go to File 2 instead. Once all ten posts are taken then feel free to post with your comments and such.
Also, I am looking to do art trades to get drawings of Mercury and Mizura. If you want to do an art trade them let me know before you start so that I can show you some quick sketches to clarify some of the things I've said about Mizura. (He's a bit complex.)
So anyway, have fun! I wish all the other questers luck and hope they wish me the same.

Bio: Mercury's father (Nependeath) is a bow-maker, he has been her teacher in the art of the underwater bow, but if she plans on doing archery on land (which she does) then she'll need to find a new teacher. With how lucrative bow-making is her mother (Merlinda) does not have to work, though she does enjoy gardening as a hobby. Mercury is the second of four children, she has an older brother (Nepemerdor, aged 16) and two younger sisters (Mershanda and Merthorain, aged 12 and 9). [[Quick Note: Mers are named for their parents, a boy takes the first part of his father's name and his mother's name, and often a slight change to make it longer. A girl's name only has to have the first part of her mothers, the rest is up to the parents. A child who is disowned by his or her parents looses the parental parts of their name and must add 'Hiyal' to the front in place of it.]] Mercury's grandmother (Merreshella) was bonded with a dragon. Such tails of valor and bravery have been told of her that Mercury and all of her siblings want to do the same. The mers hold a yearly trial to find suitable companions for the dragons, all those 13 years of age who wish to try must come forth a full year in advance to receive special training. Nepelindor failed the trials when he went forth and is now apprenticed to his father. He teases Mercury that she will also fail. She doesn't like her brother very much. Mershanda looks up to Mercury and follows her everywhere, while Merthorain is more like Nepemerdor and teases Mercury also though Mercury doesn't mind. If Mercury fails the trials she intends to continue archery and perhaps join the Royal Guard like Deklorian did. (She's had a crush on Deklorian, son of Dekshaepol and Lorane, for two years now. He's 15 and did not try for the dragon trials.)
About the Mers: Merfolk are your typical half human, half fish race. They dwell beneith the water, usually down deep where other races won't find them. As a result they have a high photosensitivity (meaning they burn in the sun quickly) and can easily take cold temperatures. A mer who leaves the water can develope legs. The first time takes a few hours and is quite painful. Every time after that takes less than ten minues and while still stings a bit, is no longer as painful. Mers can only stay out of water for about a month, after that they get land sickness which is pretty much the water calling them home. Mers who do not return after a few days of land sickness will die. Salt water is best for land sickness, spending one night there will make a mer right as rain and able to walk about again. Fresh water also works, though not as well. If the mer has only just begun to experience land sickness then a full 24 hours will be enough. For each day the mer lives after the sickness they need a week in fresh water to recover.

About Merlinnis: Merlinnis live by the water and devote their whole culture to things about the water. A woman gives birth while waist-deep in it, couple are married while the waves lap against their ankles, and the dead are placed upon burning beirs into the water to drift away. With all the time they spend near and in the water they have developed a few physical oddities such as small fins along their back, between their fingers and toes, and off the tips of their ears. They also have gills on the lower half of their ribcage.

About the Merdragons: Merdragons have lived in harmony with the mers for many generations. Like the mers they prefer to live deep in the water, though the dragons often go deeper and have very keen eyes in the dark deeps of the sea. Merdragons are sleek like dolphins but with longer necks and skinnier tails. A merdragon has no legs, only a pair of fins to swim with. However these fins house feathered aerms which the merdragon can use to also fly in the sky. When they take their arms out of the fin-sleeves, the fins hang limp like a cape.

So you may be wondering, how does a mer perform archery under water? I'm still puzzling this out myself, but let me tell you now that a lot of magic may be involved if I can't get certain laws of physics to bend. :3
First is the bow: It cannot be made of ordinary wood or else it would slowly rot under water. Instead it is made from the bone of a certain fish which resides deep in the ocean. This bone, when properly treated (which let me tell you it hard) has the same flexibilty as a bow if it had been made from ash or any other tree. Unlike wood, this bone bow can be painted without worry of spoiling it. The mers have a complex system of painting their bows to denote rank, age and ability. The bow will also work on land, but as you read on you'll find out that the arrows do not.
Next is the string: No horses underwater, right? So we need something else. Mers use a very strong vine which likes to coil around their underwater buildings. The skin of it can be sliced off without too much difficulty to reveal a very strong code beneith which works wonderfully as a bow string, and like the bow will not be damaged by the water. Depending on the reagon of the ocean from which you take your vine, the core could range from blue to green to black with black being the most common.
Arrows: There is a special kind of sea plant which fletchers harvest to make arrows. This plant grows like large needles out of the ground and feeds on a sertain species of small fish. It lures this fish in with a mating scent and then eats them through a hole in the top. However, when properly harvested the fish ends up only half eaten, the fins stick out and produce the same effect that feathers on a land arrow do. The end of the plant, that part which was imbedded in the sea bed, is sharpened to a point so that arrows underwater are much like sharp sticks. The plant still needs to be cared for or else it will go limp, mer archers line the bottom of their quivers with a special neutrient that the sharpened end of the plant can absorb. However once taken out of the water the plant dies and slowly goes limp.

The Merlinni use slightly specialized bows which have accuracy when shooting into the water. They attach strings to the arrows to bring up fish they shoot. It's kind of like harpooning. I'll have more information on this later.

The humans of Mercury's village use normal bows. Yeah! Less work for me!

Clothing: A simple shirt with one shoulder strap. It's made of small fish-scales and is red slowly fading to yellow on the bottom. There is also a metal ring around her waist (think small hula-hoop) with a few beeds and such dangling from it. When changing to human form, Mercury brings out a long length of cloth to wrap around her like a skirt (think Sasha's skirt) which is also made by sewing red/orange/yellow fishscales together.

Dragon’s Description: A full grown merdragon is 80 yards from nose to tail tip. Their long necks are strong enough to support a riding sadle. They have a large dorsal fin and two long fins used for swimming/gliding. Their skin is much like a dolphins but slightly courser. Their tails are very thin and have a sheer fin on the end.
Markings: Her fin is mostly green with little blue stripes which get closer together near the bottom, the end fin itself is blue.
Accessories on Either the character or Dragon: On the pinkie of her left hand Mercury has a coral ring, it is plain and a bit thick. Her belly-button is peirced and had a small pearl in it to denote the clan she grew up in.
Pose Preference: Mercury as a mer with Mizura to her left and slightly in front of her. Mercury is rubbing his belly. (But really, so long as it's her as a mer I don't really care what pose it is.)
Personalities: Mercury is a perfectionist with a short fuse. She'll work doggedly on one thing for hours, she doesn't give up easy. Mizura is playful and thinks most things are a game. It's very hard for merdragons to take things seriousely until about their teen years.
General Likes and Dislikes: Mercury likes things to be in order and she likes the quiet. She can get annoied when land walkers make what she thinks to be silly mistakes (which are only silly to a mer). There isn't much Mizura doesn't like, he's easy going and likes playing games. When there's nothing to play he'll make a game out of simple tasks.
