.../Updates/

sept 09, 2007 - Redoing entire quest thread!
november 25 - Back from a huge hiatus and with stable internet. Redoing most of the character and dragon design once more as I'm still unsatisfied with it. And because of a real life event.
september 16 - Finally got internet back a week ago. Scrapped and redid much of the character and dragon descriptions as I found some flaws while making concept sketches in class. Also changed character's background.
august 24 - Zomg, it's been hella long. Thought I should just write something in here even though there isn't much of an update.... Still no internet yet!!
july 09 - Had internet cancelled, so updates won't be as frequent...
july 05 - Found the Wings of a Dream shop and started quest thread.

About Avionics:
History - Centuries ago, there existed a race of bird people who lived high up in the mountains where the air was too thin for most. They called themselves the Avionics, though Sky Dwellers was another name given to them by others. Their culture was rich, though a bit too proud; they did not tolerate contact with any other species aside from occassionally the elves. One year, the emperor of the Avionic kingdom fell extremely ill. There was not a cure that could be found for the strange disease that left him dead within a few days. The emperor had but two sons, neither of which were very popular with the kingdom. Both were boastful and naive and really were not at all suited to rule. However, the emperor had not stated who would succeed him and the general rule was that the son of the emperor would become the next ruler. Both boys wanted the throne; thus a war of sorts broke out between the two. Villagers who would not choose a side were killed, forcing the few left to either pick a side or flee the kingdom. Little by little, the once great race fell to pieces and within a year, both brothers had died, slain by each other's hands. Few Avionics were still left in the now dead kingdom; they were soon forced to descend from their home up high for lack of resources and to prevent inbreeding. Many took up human spouses and after a few more centuries, it was near impossible to find someone who was even half Avionic.

Some ideas taken from the story of 'Oedipus' by Sophocles.

Appearance - Adults are usually no taller than 6'2" with a lithe, sometimes lanky, build. They have a crest of long, fine feathers atop their head, in place of hair. These feathers rarely grow past the shoulders but if trimmed will begin growing again slowly. This crest has been known to extend halfway down the spine on some males. Avionic ears are similar in shape to elven ears but are a bit higher up on the head and are feathered with longer feathers at the tips. A set of wings sprout out from between the shoulder blades, with a wingspan of up to 14 feet across. Eyes consist generally of lighter hues, including blue, yellow, orange, green, gold, and the occasional purple. Hair and feather colours varied greatly though it is to be noted that those of noble blood often were brighter and more colorful. Infants are born with feathers all over the body; these feathers are shed when they reach nine to twelve months of age. Children are wingless until they pass the Ritual of Kyearn.

Traditions - One of the biggest traditions in Avionic culture is the Ritual of Kyearn. Kyearn is the Avionic god of wind, rain, and creation and is the god most commonly worshipped by Avionics. The Ritual of Kyearn is the rite of passage for children. It is usually performed on the fourth full moon of the year at the age of eleven for boys and ten for girls. During the ceremony, each child comes before the kingdom's shaman who douses them with water before proceeding to paint a small symbol of a set of wings, using paint prepared from a rare flower. The child is required to stay home for the next week or two; during this time, small wings will begin to grow from his or her back. The initial growing is quite painful, which is why youths will often stay home for that period of time. After the wings have grown out the first few inches, the pain resides.

Neo-Avionics - Though it is impossible to find even someone who is half Avionic, there are still many who have Avionic ancestors. These are known as Neo-Avionics. The most noticeable feature of Neo-Avionics are the feathered ears, though occasionally there are some with a few feathers that grow around the edges of the hair. Because of this, they are often mistaken for Elves. Neo-Avionics never have wings and rarely speak the traditional Avionic tongue, Kuinxu.

Character‘s Background: Kai was born in a small village which had traditionally raised knights and hunters for the country's army. Her father was a renowned mastersmith and was completely human; her mother on the other hand was a Neo-Avionic and a lady knight. Because her mother's job required her to be away most of the time, Kai grew up closer to her father and became a tomboy of sorts. She'd grown used to the heat and musical clanging of weapons being forged, to the point where she herself wanted to become a blacksmith. However, she was forced to join the town's training school at the age of ten and was immediately placed under the hunter/scout category due to her keen eyesight.

She is to pass her Primary Tests at the age of twelve, whereby she will be placed into the 3rd platoon. She will set off to take the official archer test one to two weeks after this.

About the Dragon:
General: A descendant of the dragons who once were allies of the Avionics, Ryoma is a hybrosis lori, one of many variations of lori drakes. Though none of this species are really drakes at all, they were given this name because their silhouette when flying very much resembles that of a drake. Many lori drakes now inhabit tropical areas but there is still a variation that dwells high up in the mountains. These are the hybrosis loris.

Appearance: A typical hybrosis has a rather slender body with wings seemingly too big for them. They have scales like reptiles that range in colour from black to white including all shades of gray in between; they rarely have coloured scales. What makes lori drakes unique however is that they have feathered wings along with a crest of feathers that extends down along their spine. Hybrosis loris will often have feathers resembling those of falcons and hawks though ocassionally there will be one with bright coloured feathers. This is more common than finding one with bright scales. The crest for hybrosis starts at the center of the forehead betwen the eyes with three noticeably longer feathers and ends just a few inches behind the shoulder blades.

Lifestyle: Hybrosis loris are not typically pack creatures, unlike the other species of lori drakes. Males as well as females will claim a mountain as their terratory once they come of age after two years. Until then, juvenile hybrosis are tolerated by most adults in their terratories and will often be protected and watched from afar. When a hybrosis lori chooses a mate, usually between three and four years of age, the female abandons her terratory and joins the male. She will then construct her nest on a rocky overhang, which she will continue reusing as all lori drakes mate for life. When the female is ready to lay her eggs, she deposits them in the nest made of various sticks, stones, and feathers. A clutch is usually between two to three eggs which both parents look after until the hatching begins. At the sound of the first crack, the parents leave the nest until it is breeding season again. Meanwhile, over the next two days, all of the eggs will hatch. At this point, they are already fully capable of hunting and flying, though it will take them a few tries to perfect their skills. Despite already having the skills needed for survival, they are still child-like in demeanor and mental capacity; they are only able to grow mentally through hunting.
