I find that the most popular belief is that R.A.B. is Regulus Black. I admit that it makes complete sense if that is true. There are countless reasons why Regulus would fit the profile of what we know about R.A.B. But what are some other options? I would hate to be laboring under the false pretense that R.A.B. is Regulus, when there is another likely candidate sitting right under our noses.

Well there are not much to go on for finding that out because of all the characters that JK released, only Regulus fits the initials of R and B. Another thing that some people say that it might be Sirius' mother but I am doubtful of that. biggrin

I'm about 98% sure that R.A.B is regulus Black. If anyone can recall in Book 5 when the Weasleys and Harry and hermione were cleaning out Grimauld Place and they found a locket that wouldn't open. That locket would most likely be the horcrux. 3nodding

Yeah I was thinking that too. It was very odd for JKR to mention the locket in the way that she did if it was nothing more than just a locket. Seemed very ... foreshadowing-ish.

Yeah it's probably a previously unknown reason why he was killed.

There's also the thing with the Dutch language HP, where the family name 'Black' was translated to 'Zwartz', and R.A.B. becomes, correspondingly, R.A.Z.

So, yeah, we're fairly sure it's Regulus.

But if it isn't, there's really no one else we've heard of in canon that it could be instead. So it has to be either Regulus or a character we haven't seen enough to know the full initials of yet.

Haha well if that Dutch translation theory holds up, it looks to be pretty positive that R. A. B. is Regulus! I think we pretty much knew that already, but the B to Z situation really puts the nail in the coffin!

Who Framed Regulus Black?

This editorial pretty much convinced me that RAB was probably framed because it's really too obvious. Most of us thought it was Regulus on July 17, especially with the heavy locket made of an unknown material in Grimmauld Place. Obvious is not something that Jo does often, and even before the translations nearly everyone was guessing Regulus just with the locket found during HQ-cleaning and Sirius' conversation with Harry about Regulus.

Honestly, Regulus is nowhere near experienced as Dumbledore (who got his hand charred destroying a Horcrux), so how could some newbie DE and relatively recent Hogwarts graduate (Black Family Tree) get through the Horcrux defenses? Would a person with that little experience even be entrusted with a Horcrux or be able to get past heavy-duty defenses? If Lucius Malfoy kept the Diary in his ancestral home and Voldemort set up the Locket himself (inferred from what Dumbledore says in The Cave) then how does Regulus get to the Horcrux? Another thing, Voldemort may have set the whole thing up- Fauxcrux, RAB, and everything; Dumbledore doesn't call him brilliant in CoS for nothing.

RAB initial-wise is Regulus (all the translations prove that), but I think that someone would have enough common sense not to brag about destroying the most private secret of the current dark wizard at large and framed a relatively new follower of said dark wizard. If Voldemort did set up a Fauxcrux, then it would be a diversionary tactic and he'd have the Locket hidden somewhere else; for all we know, Voldemort could wear it on his neck.

I'm almost positive it's Regulus. Because of A) the obvious reasons (the initials coincidence and such) and B) the fact that JK rowling only brought him up briefly but still with alot of detail. I'm sure we'll hear more about him, she wouldn't make him sound important for nothing.
