Hobbies:
Death: Than grew up primarily worshipping the Watcher in the Woods, his people’s god of death. In addition to an academic interest, he studies people’s beliefs and practices surrounding death as a form of religious devotion. One of the commandments Than grew up with taught that, because no mortal can truly understand death, the Watcher’s followers must remain open-minded, curious, and respectful toward the ways that others deal with it. Mostly, this involves reading about people’s beliefs and practices, but when Than has the chance to learn from someone directly, he will eagerly ask questions or participate in any rituals he’s allowed.

Esoterica and Mysticism:

Quilting, Patchwork, and Embroidery: On Than’s homeworld, his people took sewing very seriously, both as a necessary survival skill and as a form of artistic expression. There’s no sense in wasting good fabric when you can instead repurpose it to fix something or make something new. Than learned his way around a needle and thread very early, practicing with his mother. While he hardly considers himself an expert, he can repair clothes pretty handily, he has made quilted blankets before, and he especially enjoys embellishing clothes with personal embroidery. Ignoring the world and focusing on his stitches helps calm him down.

Bartering: Flea markets, swap meets, and similar places have an almost magnetic allure to Than.

Flaws:
Hypocritical / Unaccountable: Good luck should you ever want Than to apologize because he will make this an Epic Hard Mode challenge. Happy to criticize others (usually at length with deep cuts to match), he rarely realizes that he’s complaining about things he does himself. If someone points out his hypocrisy, he will twist himself around beyond the point of reason, trying to rationalize why It’s Different For Him, Actually. He brings the same attitude to apologizing. Even if the consequences of his actions cause him suffering, he looks for any reason why he shouldn’t need to admit he screwed up and/or hurt someone, any excuse to wriggle out of saying that he’s sorry.

Control Freak: Thanatos can be insufferable when things don’t go his way or don’t meet his (arbitrarily) high standards. He is quick to anger when people disagree with his plans, and may storm out rather than collaborate. No, see, he has decided the best way to handle things. Have you considered that, by disagreeing, you are victimizing him? Eugh, it isn’t his fault that you’re sloppy. This is one area where he’s slightly less hypocritical, holding himself to similarly high standards, especially for controlling himself and how people perceive him. However, the ways he punishes himself for “falling short” often veer into self-harm.

Sensitive: Than wants to be perceived as invulnerable, but it is very easy to wound him. Whenever he claims to be unbothered, he’s more likely seething and clawing up his own emotional furniture. He takes things personally when he shouldn’t, and he reads malice into situations where it doesn’t exist. No, he doesn’t plan on addressing those issues unless someone else forces the matter; he’s not hurt, YOU’RE hurt, go away, shut up. This makes it hard to bond with him: why bother when he’ll take your head off for no ostensible reason. Then, he gets upset about being lonely with no idea how he got that way.

Inferiority-Superiority Complex: In his heart of hearts, Than does not like himself. He feels that his true self is weak, pathetic, clingy and needy, a failure senshi whom nobody could truly love. Admitting this would make him vulnerable, though, or worse, require him to work on himself. That’s unacceptable to Than, so he overcompensates and hopes nobody notices. He comes on arrogantly, as if perfectly assured that he’s the best and can’t be touched. This pattern isolates him from others, both because he lies to hide his feelings and because his behavior makes people loath to give him a chance.
