I got this article in my email from The Bible Never Said That! What does it mean at the bottom *contain Gods Word?* Doesn't the Bible contain the Word of God? I thought the Bible does contain the Word of God?
One of the main differences between Progressive Christianity and Historic Christianity is its view of the Bible. Historically, Christians have viewed the Bible as the Word of God and authoritative for our lives. Progressive Christianity generally abandons these terms, emphasizing personal belief over biblical mandate.
Comments you might hear:
The Bible is a human book... I disagree with the Apostle Paul on that issue... The Bible condones immorality, so we are obligated to reject what it says in certain places... The Bible "contains" the word of God...

I've come across articles on the internet that say, "The Bible Never Said That!" or, "Things That Aren't in the Bible..." and while some of them are helpful and correct, I find that this can often be an atheist outlet to bash Christianity and Christians for thinking such things.
I have heard those arguments, though, A LOT. The ones listed below, "Comments you might hear:" and there are some more intricate and twisted ones these days that are designed to get you off topic.
I can't seem to remember what, "progressive Christianity" is, but I guess as the post said - ignoring God's word and sticking with what they mostly believe, not what God says.
Thanks for sharing 3nodding

Comments you might hear:
The Bible is a human book... I disagree with the Apostle Paul on that issue... The Bible condones immorality, so we are obligated to reject what it says in certain places... The Bible "contains" the word of God... Orthodox Christians and theologians refer to the bible as The Living Word, as we not only read it but live and experience it, ex: “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”Hebrews 4:12 People think that because the Bible is something that is read and lived that we are somehow slaves to it or rather it has some authoritarian rule over us when this is missing the point entirely. The Bible is an important tool and helps us become closer to Christ by understanding and living his word, ultimately giving us purpose. It might sound redundant but focus less on what people say about about the bible and more on what the bible says about people such as the majority of 1st John. ResourcesA good short video from the Be the Bee series (we watch these at my bible/orthodox study group, great videos): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhb3t1jXock Here's a good sermon that I found talking about the subject that should be helpful: https://www.orthodoxsermons.org/sermons/living-word-god Link to the powerpoint: https://docs.google.com/viewerng/viewer?url=https://www.orthodoxsermons.org/sites/default/files/attachments/admin/FrAnthonyMesseh-TheLivingWordOfGod.ppt The OrthodoxWiki also has some good stuff regarding the Bible/Holy Scripture: https://orthodoxwiki.org/Holy_Scripture Hope this helps and also garner some discussion regarding the Holy Scripture in general
