This has been bugging me for a while, especially with the information that Byakugan can now be "awakened" when it was never shown that that was possible before.
So I'm wondering...how the heck do some of these kekkei genkai work? If you have a bloodline thing, is it automatically passed down? Are some of them recessive? How inbred are some of these old clans?

Feel free to talk about any clan/jutsu/bloodline. I'm most interested in how this pertains to Byakugan, since they were given the least amount of attention, but other things are just as mind-boggling, so have at it.

Byakugan: Dominant? Recessive? WTF even?

I haven't actually read any of the manga chapters that came out after 700, but I saw panels that revealed Himawari, despite having Naruto's blue eyes, is able to activate the Byakugan. Further spoilers from the new Boruto manga (which are not necessarily true) reveal
that Boruto now has a Byakugan in one eye; theories abound as to how he got it
.

I always assumed that Byakugan was a super dominant gene; after all, pre-chapter 700, every single Hyuuga in the manga had the exact same white eyes and was capable of using the dojutsu. While it's possible that the clan members who did not have white eyes were just never shown, it's more likely to assume that Hyuuga = white eyes, always.

But then chapter 700 came along and jacked up all my theories. Naruto and Hinata had two children. Neither of them had white eyes. Clearly, Byakugan isn't that dominant, unless Uzumaki/Namikaze genes are so crazy strong that they somehow managed to override it (which is entirely possible considering Hinata should not really have been able to have a blond child, but that's anime for ya).

When Kishimoto was interviewed about Naruto's children not having Byakugan, he simply said "he forgot to give it to them." But an in-universe explanation for the kids not having it is that the Byakugan is actually NOT a dominant gene. Which means, Hyuuga person + non-Hyuuga person = no Byakugan. To get Byakugan, you need Hyuuga person + Hyuuga person. Headcanon accepted--I always figured the Naruto clans were pretty endogamous anyway.

But then Himawari "activates" Byakugan, throwing all my theories for another loop. Byakugan is now acting like the Sharingan? What? How is this even possible? The only explanation I can come up with is that there have literally never been any half-Hyuuga people before and thus, no one knew that could happen. Which...is kind of frightening; how inbred is the Hyuuga clan???
And if that is the case, how the heck did Hinata get away with marrying outside of her clan?

Thoughts? I know I'm overthinking this sweatdrop

I always just kinda figured they'd marry normies into their clan every once in a blue moon just to keep things fresh but not dilute their bloodline too much. They probably also kept a very strict marriage chart to ensure nobody got *too inbred* (cousins r' cool every other generation, so on and so forth.

I figure Himawari just has the hyuuga blood running stronger in her since she resembles her mother more anyways. But Burrito activating one eye is complete horseshit. Unless his other eye is damaged somehow there's no explaining that.
