                                                                  Tsch, tu-tsch, tu-tsch . . .

The rest of the band soon joined in, creating a smooth, yet lively beat. Ah, Jazz. Nothing could quite beat the sound, but a live band in a lounge like this? Sun kissed hands pulled a pocket watch out of the inner breast pocket of a soft grey tweed jacket. Popping open the little mechanical device, he took note of the time before his eyes shifted to the cover where the inside was inscribed. Always and forever, love Maria De Luca. April 21st, 1943. Huh. Seems he was getting closer each time he jumped, but the problem was if he was here and this gift was from Maria, then he was damn sure in a lot of trouble. Grandpa Nico, for whom he'd been named after as well, was a man of many troubles and had most certainly be in with the wrong crowd back in the day. Ah, but that was the allure of Hollywood, wasn't it? Adventure, romance, mystery, fame, and of course, money.

"Yo, Nicky boy, thought 'cha was gonna skip out on us. 'Specially with that business ya pulled last week, huh." Brilliant blues shifted to meet the sight of a large portly man in a dark navy suit, thin lines of white separated the solid hue and gave it a little more of an appeal. The man's dark hair was slicked back with enough gel the wind probably wouldn't even get it to move during hurricane season, but it allowed those beady dark hues to stare at you like he'd burn a hole into your soul the longer he kept it up. But one thing was for certain, this man was one hell of a scumbag just by the looks of him. But one with a lot of money and likely a lot of power in this town.

"Cat got ya tongue, sonny? Or ya just surprised to see ol' Louie found you here in this s**t hole you boys call a lounge?" The man moved to join him at the table as Nico contemplated on how to handle the situation. His grandfather never really got too into his stories of his early life, mainly because Nico's mother was always so quick to shush him. Bad influence she claimed, but such stories always interested him. Too bad he hadn't gotten to hear this one, for he was unaware of what crime of grandpa Nico had committed this time against such a fella as this Louie here. "Well, what can I say, Louie, I am." Damn, Nico, if you're gonna do this, least make sure you don't get grandpa Nico killed. Who knows what it'll do to the time line. "Say, mind me asking what such a guy like you came to find me? Surely this isn't just a social call." The other man seemed to smirk a moment, looking over to the band, but the expression dropped, shifting into a more serious gaze, though something told Nico that if the other man could, he'd rip Nico's tongue out right about now. "Damn right you are, Nicky. Now, tell me where the drugs are and I'll have the boys outside kill ya quickly, refuse and I'mma have to send bits of you to your wife for your fifth anniversary. Next week, right?"

Oh, drugs? Well, maybe he shouldn't have been too surprised by that. It was rather big these days, particularly cocaine and morphine, right? Eh, either way, he was in trouble. "Alright, alright. I'll tell you where they are," He moved to pick up the untouched scotch on the table that had been sitting on the table before him, slowly lifting the glass as if to take a drink, but with a quick jerk of the arm, he threw the drink in the other man's face before dropping the glass and making a run for the back of the lounge. No way in hell was he going be left at the mercy of this man's thugs, particularly when he had no clue where his grandfather had stashed this man's drugs.

An angry cry called from behind the man, but he didn't stop, pushing past wait staff as he made it into the kitchens, dodging and weaving his way through to the door and out into the alley. Ah, where to now? Knowing he' couldn't just stand here, he headed deeper into the alley rather than out to the street where the man's goons were surely waiting for him. So much for avoiding trouble, right? A few shouts from beyond the building sounded, but that gave him all the more reason to keep moving, a hand fleeing to his hand to keep a hold of his hat as it threatened to fall off, leaving evidence of his presence here. Not today, good sir. Not today.

Before long ol' Nico escaped certain death and found himself along the stretch of street, somewhere surely along Sunset and Wilcox boulevard. He took a moment to admire the old streets of the city, curious as to what life was really like during this period of time, but he knew he wasn't going to have to full experience. No, like every other jump in time, he was here to do something, but what? Keep grandpa Nico from ending up dead? To give Louie his drugs? Maybe even something about grandma Maria? Who knew for sure, but it always became clear later on, for now he needed to focus on what to do and who he could trust. Maybe some coffee to help keep him on his toes as well.

Letting his feet guide him, Nico found his way to a nearby diner and slipped inside. The smell of a late night breakfast greeted him, along with the strong and unforgettable smell of a fresh pot of coffee. "Welcome, darlin'. Why don't you take a seat and I'll be right with you?" The waitress behind the counter offered a smile, the small blonde looked too sweet for a city girl, particularly this city, but this was a place of dreams and hopes, men and women from all over flocked here to fulfill dreams that would likely never come true. "Sure thing, Miss." He tipped his hat before fully removing the article and moved to take a seat at the counter on the far end, away from the two uniforms who were enjoying their own cups of the dark caffeinated brew and trying to chat up the other young woman behind the counter, that one a tall brunette who was showing off the new red lipstick to the pair. What a tease she was. No doubt she'd make it big . . . In the back of someone's car. Ah, but perhaps that was a little too judgmental.

Adjusting himself on the seat, the man put his hat down and laced his fingers together upon the counter top. Drugs, mobsters, and money. How his grandfather got into these messes, he hadn't clue, but there was something here he was needed for and he had to find out what it was. The clock was ticking and it was time to get to work. Maybe after this, just maybe, he'd finally find his way home . . .

ooc : Woo~! Finally got this done. Anyways, it was inspired by L.A. Noire and Quantum Leap.

Her thoughts quickly became overwhelming

when they started to drift towards that dreadful, heart wrenching night from so long ago and she snapped to the reality of jazz music and stranger danger company. It had been years since the incident with her now ex-husband, thanks to him signing the papers the day before yesterday. It took two years of begging and court dates to finally get him to sign them and now she was finally free. With her new found freedom, she decided to celebrate with a few glasses of Scotch in a dark, downtown nightclub that happened to be near her loft. The little bit of Scotch she had left in her glass was not enough to drown the sad reminder of the little bit she had going for her in her life. No love life. No family. Just herself, her loft, and her blog. Maybe I’ll get a cat, she thought to herself. But then again, cats are nothing but cute bastards, just like my darling husband. With a hiccup she corrected herself, Excuse me, ex-husband. The barely drunken girl downed the rest of her drink with a twist in her face and exhaled an ‘ahh’ sound through gritted teeth, staring into the short, empty glass.

”How about another?” said an unfamiliar voice. The girl diverted her attention from the glass in her hands to a young gentleman she assumed was in charge of the bar. With a smile she sat the glass down and scooted it towards him with her index finger. “Please,” she replied kindly as she watched him grab the glass and gave it a quick sniff. “I’ve been here for most the night. Seeing you take glasses back of scotch, huh? Must be trying to forget something, or at least take your mind off of it for a little while.” He then sat the glass back down, picked up a bottle of Ardbeg from behind the counter and began to fill the glass. “Maybe.” replied the girl to his statement, meeting his eyes and he passed her the glass. “Well, if so, you shouldn’t be drinking just any Scotch. It should be this Scotch.” The girl lifted the glass, giving it a once sniff over and stared into the liquid, “And why’s that?” The bartender leaned over the counter with the bottle in hand, displaying it as if to really sell this drink. “This Scotch is Ardbeg. It smells fruity with hints of citrus tones and dark chocolate. Which I’m sure you smelled a little of just now, am I right?” The girl nodded once, but still curious to hear what else he was going to say, as it sounded like he knew his drinks. “And what about taste?” The man smiled, “Tangy lemon-lime, black pepper, cinnamon, and toffee. It really packs a punch to your palette.” The man raised his eyebrows as if waiting for her to try it, and so she did. The girl took one gulp back and let the liquid run down her throat, making another ‘ahh’ sound. “Very… smokey, I like it” she answered as she took another swig. The man smiled as if pleased that she was enjoying it. “That is definitely a celebratory, on the house drink.” He then walked away to help other customers with a smile sewed to his face.

The girl had forgotten any negative thoughts that once filled her mind, thanks to a free drink and nice gesture of a young, bartender. She finished her drink with a smile on her face, sitting the empty glass down on the bar. Before leaving, she pulled out a fifty dollar bill from her divorce compensation envelope, folded it and sat it under the glass. Even though the man was busy with customers, the girl whistled towards him and pointed to the empty glass, making sure he saw and then walked to the door. She opened the bar door leading outside and turned to look back, seeing the bartender’s face light up at the unexpected fifty and then turning to the night, she headed toward her loft. The girl was sure the bartender wasn’t aware of what he did for her, but still, she was thankful and because of his nice gesture, she was sure that she’d return for not only the wonderful liquor he introduced her to, but for both of their company.

ooc: I wanted to write more, but decided quality over quantity and a little bit of suspense, I guess? haha.
