The goddamn zombie apocalypse. Nobody knows how it started or where it started but it wasn’t long before the country and possibly the world were infected.
Our story focuses on a group of survivors Little Rock, Arkansas. Logan was the self-imposed leader of the group. He had blond hair with dark blue eyes and a scar on his cheek. He’s strong, strategic, and bit of an a** but he had lead his group through many dangers. His choice of weapons were dual .99 pistols, A metal bat, and a sawed-off shotgun. He used to be a professional football player.
Keith was a mechanic from Georgia. He had red hair that he spiked up and slicked back. He had quite a bit of strength and was an amazing shot with a sniper rifle, his weapon of choice. He also had a Deagle and kept an axe at his side. He is a fan of pyrotechnics.
Sarah was the girl of the group and boy was she a badass. She’d been in the army and had been in the middle of her second term when the infection struck. With the government in shambles and people dying every day, she knew her only option would be to survive. She was the medic of the group, having done her tech school in the medical field. She was the smartest of the group and her choice of weapons were an M-16 rifle, a magnum and dual machetes.
There were two other guys named Ricky and Rob, twins who were pretty much inseparable. Both had short black hair with freckles and were the shortest of the group.
However, none of these characters are our focus. Our focus is on the last member of the group, a man named Ian Hecox. To most people, he wasn’t really that special. He spent most of his time gaming but no amount of gaming could prepare him for this. He wasn’t as strong as the others or as fast as the others. The only thing going for him were his good looks and his fast reflexes... and yet Ian is the main character of the story.
Ian felt out of breath. They’d just stopped in Little Rock after having run away from a horde of zombies. Ian knew he was the weakest person in the group. He thought back to a couple months before.
Ian and the others were hiding out but their hideout would last much longer. They had all been together only about a week… and Logan was yelling at Ian. “You nearly got us all killed. You are so ******** slow man, why are you even here?” he yelled. Surprisingly, Sarah stood up for him.
“Don’t yell at him. We can’t be top-heavy football players. This is a damn zombie apocalypse and we CANNOT start turning on each other. We need to survive together.” she said.
“He’s been here a week and I can already see he’s not going to keep up with us. He’s out of shape, he can’t defend himself.” Logan said.
Logan was right. Ian wasn’t as fast as them and they were always covering his a** or saving him and he couldn’t do the same. He felt worthless to this team and there were times he wondered if he should just wander off and let himself get eaten or turned. It was Sarah who convinced him otherwise.
Ian was tired of being the weak link. If there was one thing he was good at, it was being determined and he knew that if he set his mind to it, he could do it. “Alright gang. The Arkansas River is in that direction. Once we find it, we can follow it all the way to Colorado.” Said Kyle, pointing north. There were rumors that Sacramento had a safezone for survivors. It was all speculation at this point because that’s what everyone had said about Atlanta, Georgia which had pretty much turned into a s**t-storm.
“Guys I think we need to take a break. Ian is-“ said Sarah, before she was cut off by Ian.
“No. I’m fine. We can rest when we get to the river.” He said. He knew it was a good couple more miles and he could feel his lungs protesting but he refused to be the week link anymore. Ian was a survivor and he may one day find himself all alone. He had to be prepared. He was already in better shape than he had been a few months prior.
The others looked at Ian, still obviously breathing hard. He straightened up and did a couple stretches, before he started walking. “Onwards men!” he said, pointing.

Ian felt like he was going to pass out at any second. His lungs burned like hell, but finally they had reached the river. He dropped to his knees next to the bank and started splashing water on his face and neck.
“Oh glorious water!” he said, starting to gulp some of it down before filling his water bottle. The water felt so amazing running down his throat. He sat on the bank a moment as everyone filled their canteens and took stock. Logan and Sarah seemed to discussing something over a map. Sarah turned and walked towards Ian.
“Alright Ian. It’s lesson time. We need to find somewhere to stop for the night. Where should we go?” asked Sarah.
“You’re asking him?” said Logan. She shushed him and he growled, turning away. Ian frowned as he thought a moment and looked around.
“Well… there are lots of trees here, which gives us a good place to hide. However while the zombies would not be able to see us, they would be able to hear us easily with all the leaves and branches spread around. Also, the tide of the river appears to rise every night, so down low would be bad.” He said. He peered off into the distance. “We could camp on the overhead, but we wouldn’t be able to build a fire because the zombies would see it miles away. Why don’t we camp under it?” he asked, seeming to have gotten an epiphany.
“The bridge will provide overhead cover so we can build a fire. Also it’s not that far from the river, so if we need to we can escape down here we can.” Said Ian, nodding confidently. Sarah smirked at Logan, who just rolled his eyes and turned away again, though he had to admit that the little nerd had a good plan.
“If no one has a better idea I say with go with Ian’s plan.” Said Kyle, shouldering his sniper rifle. “Any objections?” Getting none, he stood up from filling his canteen and started making his way to the overpass, with the others following. Already the sun was beginning to set.
“Alright. The Twins will build the fire. Ian and Kyle will take first watch. I want someone up above, watching the rode and someone down here, watching the ground. Normal rotations.” Said Logan, barking out orders. Kyle decided to take the high ground since he had the sniper rifle. The Twins got a small fire set up, enough to warm up a can of beans for everyone. It wasn’t long before night fell.
Ian had no problems with night watch. Being a gamer, he used to stay up late playing games anyway and when he didn’t, well he suffered from insomnia. Either way, he didn’t get nearly as much sleep as he should.
Ian did get bored easily, however. He wasn’t a fan of just sitting there with nothing to do. He knew he was supposed to be keeping an eye out, but he couldn’t help that his mind would wander. It wandered to his family, to his old friends. He wondered about life and what the future would hold.
Ian was humming and lightly tapping his foot as he walked around, nearly getting the crap scared out of him by Kyle, who was coming to wake up Ricky for his shift. Sarah was supposed to take Ian shift but Ian could feel it would be another night where he didn’t sleep so there was no point in trying to go to sleep. He decided to go ahead and take Sarah’s shift. She seemed to be tired today anyways.
Another three hours passed and Ian still didn’t feel tired at all. In fact, he felt on edge, like something was coming. He heard a slight rustling and turned to see Logan getting up for his shift. Logan spot him and walked over.
“Insomnia again?” he asked. Logan wouldn’t admit it, but he was often worried about Ian. He hassled Ian a lot but only because he didn’t want Ian to have to rely on them all the time. Still he couldn’t help but worry and by the bags under Ian’s eyes, he had every reason too.
“Yeah I feel. I don’t feel tired so I took Sarah’s shift. I do, however feel on edge.” Said Ian. He rubbed his arms and looked around. “So it’s not just me then. Kyle didn’t feel anything but Ricky told me something was off.” Said Logan. He squint his eyes and peered into the darkness as if that would make a difference. He turned to face Ian. Frowning. “You should try to get a little sleep. God knows you need it. It’s my shift anyways and we don’t need three people.” He stated, with his arms crossed. Ian huffed out a laugh, realizing that he was basically being ordered to go to bed. “Yeah like that’s going to happen.” Ian replied. He head over to where his sleeping bag was set up and attempted to fall asleep. He did manage to get almost an hour before he was lightly shaken awake by Sarah.
“Ian there’s zombies. We have to go.” She said, urgently. Kyle put out the fire as everyone started gathering their things.
“I counted at least 15 zombies. We have to get out of here.” Whispered Rob. “Looks like your bad feeling was right on the money.” Logan muttered to Ian. Ian, still slightly disoriented from being woken up, just nodded dumbly, gathering his stuff and then following the others. Logan lead them through the trees with a flashlight.
“Ah s**t!” hissed Logan, sliding to a stop. He could hear groans coming from the trees and had no choice but to turn off his flashlight. Now there was only starlight and he could barely see s**t with that. They all grabbed onto each other, making their way through the darkness and into the direction of the river.
Normally it was Ian who made mistakes but this time, it had been Kyle. He swung his axe at a shape nearby, thinking it was a zombie but it ended up being a deer. The deer cried out, alerting the other nearby zombies. The got into a struggle, using only whatever melee weapons they had to fight back the zombies.
Ian had a frying pan and was swinging it wildly at any zombie that came close. Kyle made another mistake as he struggled with a zombie, using his gun to shove it back. The gun misfired from a hard impact to the zombie’s skull. A few seconds later they heard the blood-curdling shriek of the horde from the bridge and like a giant wave, the zombies turned from walkers to runners and proceeded to run towards the noise.
“What do we do?!” asked one of the Twins.
“Run like hell!” said Sarah. The survivors took off running, now using their flashlights for risk of running to the trees. The zombies were gaining on them quickly. Like the horde was a lion and the survivors were the prey, which they were.
“Jump in!” yelled Logan.
“We can’t! The current is too fast to swim!” yelled Sarah.
“We don’t have a choice!” he shout back before jumping into the river. The others soon followed. The water was at least 9 to 12 feet deep, but adrenaline was pushing them forward. As Ian was nearing the shore, he glanced back over his shoulder to see one of the Twins, Ricky, struggling. His pack was too heavy and his arms weren’t strong enough to pull the pack and fight the current and he began drifting farther and farther downstream. Ian pushed himself from the shore and swam after Ricky.
Ricky was having trouble keeping his head up with the pack on his back. The others noticed that neither Ian nor Ricky had reached the shore yet. They didn’t need their flashlights anymore as dawn was approaching and the sky had started to lighten.
“Look! There they are!” said Sarah, pointing out to the river where the two men were flowing with the current.
“We have to help them!” cried Rob.
“The current is too fast here. We need to make it down the river somewhere before they get there.” Said Logan. The survivors turned and raced downstream, hoping they could catch up to the two men. After about 10 minutes, they managed to get ahead of the two men but just as Logan was going to jump in and save them, Ricky’s pack finally sunk down under the water, pulling Ricky and Ian along with it.
