So what are your favorite types of fanfiction? Themes, genres and such? Typically I read romance fanfictions. Well, Romance/adventure/action. I prefer to have some action going on during the story instead of the entire thing being driven by drama. I usually get bored with those after a while.

So, I would like to give a concise answer to this question but it can't be done. My favorite type of fanfiction changes so much that I can't exactly pin down one genre or theme, but that's not going to stop me from answering. xp
I usually prefer action, mystery, romance, and drama with a bit of comedy thrown in for levity's sake. I like to read fics that center around my favorite pairings and include original characters but I usually avoid Mpreg and angst/suicide fics. I only avoid the latter because I've yet to come across one that's tastefully done and/or actually captures the struggle that goes on in one's mind when they're making such a decision. I don't avoid angst/suicide fics because they're too emotionally "heavy" for me.
Lately I've become obsessed with the "thrown into [insert universe here]" themed fics. The only thing that bothers me about these, however, is that the writers usually never explain how the character from our "world" ended up in the the fandom's "world". It's gaping plot-holes like that that usually turn me off of those fics even though I really want to like them. But that doesn't mean I haven't found any to obsess over... because I have.

Normally I can push through the lack of explanation on why the person is brought into the fandom. But yeah, it DOES bother me. But, I pretty much agree with your entire post. Angsty stuff usually is just so....immature sounding. Like teenage dribble that is overly done. I just can't take it. I do like humor but usually humor that comes into play from witty dialogue between characters! ^_^

I also like the new (at least for the fandoms I haunt) feature of doing an advanced search for fics with OCs. I didn't exactly mean the stereotypical angsty teen fics when I said angst/suicide, but those are rather painful to read through as well since they tend to get a bit redundant. sweatdrop Now, I love me some witty dialogue~! I am always raring for a good romance story, especially for my favorite pairings.
But while I enjoy pointless fluff from time to time I need something more... like an actual plot.
A good mystery is always welcome and the most popular in my usual fandom. Some action and adventure too.
Things with a Supernatural flare are usually well executed. Humor is also a big plus.
I generally try to stay away from gender swap stories as they never really appeal that much to me as well as Mpreg.
I also don't care much for original characters unless the OCs aren't Mary Sueish, make the Major characters fall in love with them or hog most of the spot light as the major plot. They actually have to be believable.
Not that I am bashing people who write them. Everyone can write what they want. xD It just isn't my cup of tea.
As for Thrown into Universe themed stories, I am actually keeping track of a cross over story for Detective Conan.
It is where the two characters are thrown into an impromptu adventure across the universe by being dropped into different worlds from other fandoms, each chapter being a different place, all thanks to a certain gem.
While each chapter is different, they are all connected in some form as the two try to get back home.

I love AU, character study, world building, action/adventure, toxic romance, train-wreck.

...I like fanfics that actually get to their finish line. Most of the fandoms I'm in are long dead, so it's frustrating when an author starts up a very interesting story then just quits a few chapters after, despite the large number of reviews.
I adore fanfics with a lot of genres. c: Romance, action, mystery, etc. It makes things more interesting especially if the author is very good at stringing all these genres into one big necklace of realistic life in a fanfic. Like Allora Gale's Dauntless. Despite it having 96 chapters, I endlessly read and reread it.
Crossovers! Oh god. But not those with characters from both sides. I don't know why, but it was rare for me to get invested into those kinds of stories. I liked those where characters from World A are put into World B like they were always there. It always interested me on how the characters would turn out (like how would their personalities be altered, why) especially on which roles they would have. A really cliche and overdone one is the Harry Potter!AU which I still adore nevertheless. owo'' Like, which Houses do the characters get sorted into, and why? It's an interesting way to see how the authors perceive the characters in order for them to be able to write them out and make the story.

Hmm, I like a lot of things, it'd probably be easier to list what I generally avoid (like tragedies, for the most part, if I can help it). However, in terms of a theme I find myself gravitating towards, the whole "secret revealed" plotline tends to interest me more often than not.

I never pay attention to the theme, as along as it has my fav shipping or character Ill read it. I do tend to stay away from hardcore dark themes. You know what I mean? Theres dark then there is gonk neutral dark
I do love Harems and reverse harems so romance I guess to answer the question.

I love Modern AU or even regular. And it's probably because most of the fandoms I read into have messed up True Endings so I find myself seeking comfort in AU's. xD

What fandoms do you read? I'm asking because a couple of my fandoms have messed up endings as well and I also like to find AUs that don't kick my feelings in the stomach. xd

lol yeah, that's so true. Just knowing that in canon, every thing is all messed up.

Romance seems to be mostly unavoidable in fanfiction, so it's probably the most common genre I read. There's nothing wrong with romance, but I generally don't prefer it as the main plot device. Ideally, the mushy stuff will be broken up by action, adventure, or mystery, which are my favorite genres. My guilty pleasure is erotica, but I'm very picky about how and why the naughty scenes happen. Comedy's also good for breaking up tense scenes, but I tend to not read anything that's strictly comedic.
Admittedly, I'm very picky about reading romance. I dislike when authors rush the romance just to get to naughty scenes or fluffy scenes. I'd much rather read the the friendship building up into one character starting to see the other in a new light, then the awkward tension as they dance around the subject a while until one finally comes out with their feelings. It makes the point when they are a couple that much more satisfactory, because you got to witness it come to that point. I also don't like sex for the sake of sex in romance/erotica. Build up to that, please.
The way I write really reflects my interests in fanfiction. I get bored of the romance, or the action, or what have you, so I need to break it up by splicing in another genre. I also make myself write the agonizing courtship and awkward crush phases when I do incorporate romance because I feel that the writing is better if I make myself wait.

My favorite flavors:
-Utilizing characters' personalities to create conflict, particularly if the results are humorous or dramatic. A lot of my favorite Batman fics do this, simply because most of the villains have such strong personalities that sometimes all you need to do is lock them in a room and throw away the key.
-Perspective flips
-Crossovers
-Filling in canon gaps, or going into details canon may have touched upon, but forgot about/never really went back to. I've done this myself. >>
-Mysteries
-Day-in-the-life-of stories, particularly with minor characters who don't get much to them. It's fun to see how people interpret what little information is given.
-Fandom-specific, but since none of the Five Nights at Freddy's characters really have distinct personalities (some are literally just a name on a paycheck), I like to see what people come up with in terms of personality, whether or not the animatronics have human-like intelligence, whether or not the human characters come to an understanding with them, and how they deal with core canon events. Results are everywhere from help-I-can't-breathe hilarious to chill-your-bones terrifying. Sometimes in the same fic.
