This is something I've been curious about since everyone has their own different motivations for writing in general. But what makes you write Fanfiction instead of original fiction? Or do you write both? Why?
For me, fanfiction is a nice break from the work I have to do with my book. It's a place where it doesn't matter if it's not quite up to what I can do in my limits because it's not something that will be published nor will I make a career or anything out of it.
Plus when I find myself obsessing over a fandom, writing fanfiction is a way to channel that energy and toy around and get more into the story line. Granted I don't get as into writing fanfiction as I do my original work so I've noticed that I tend to be lazy in comparison to what I can do and I can fizzle out when I fall out of a fandom obsession but it is still something I enjoy and I also love it when others like the work I do.

Interesting question. I'd have to say that I write fanfiction because I've fallen deeply in love with the fandom. My love for it gets my creative juices flowing and sometimes I just can't stop. It starts with me reading loads of fics and then getting ideas for my own once I fully submerge myself in the universe. Finally, I just write. I write until I drain myself and fall out of love with the fandom. It's irritating and often frustrating, but it never takes too long for me to fall back into my lover's arms. whee
My inspiration is often of a dubious nature, though. It's almost fleeting. And sometimes I'll write purely because I know I can, but it never has as much depth or soul as writing for the love of a story. Sometimes I'll get annoyed with fics that I see, and that will prompt me to write. What's the adage? "If you want something done right, do it yourself." Not to say that I write "right" and my way is the only way. It's just that sometimes you need to have your spin on something, your idea, heard.

I write both when I'm in the mood to write. I write fanfiction usually because I love a series or fandom, but am disappointed by some aspect of the original. Mainly, my favorite character being one of the ones shunted off into the background in the original work.
Sometimes I write because I see potential in another fanfiction that was never reached or because I get sick of seeing the same fanfiction over and over, just written by different people.
This is going to sound conceited and it probably is, but mostly I write fanfiction because because I love something, but every time I see anything to do with it I think, "They're doing it wrong!"

In short, I write because I have an idea and its much more satisfying writing it down and having it out rather than having it constantly play and replay in my head.

Aha This is going to sound conceited and it probably is, but mostly I write fanfiction because because I love something, but every time I see anything to do with it I think, "They're doing it wrong!" Honestly that doesn't sound conceited to me at all. It's a natural reaction, really. Or maybe it is conceited and I just don't see it that way because I often think "They're doing it wrong!" as well! Then again, I mostly think, "They can do it better!" 4laugh

Although along the lines of wanting to "fix" something, I've seen that done in some pretty terrible ways. I've done it myself, but I didn't shout from the rooftops that I'm writing my fic because some people aren't doing it right. Unfortunately, I've seen some authors write stuff like that in an author's note in a roundabout way of shaming those implied writers (and sometimes they name the writers). To me, it's comparable to those people who completely rip someone's fic and post it with insulting commentary. It's totally against FFnet's ToS, but I still see it done in some of the more popular fandoms like Harry Potter, YuYu Hakusho, and Naruto. And sadly, they still get reviewers who think it's funny and just eat it right up.

I don't write, but I read a great deal.
One of the reasons why I love fan fiction so much is because of the boundless opportunity it presents. Characters that you wanted to get together in the original but never did get together suddenly can and do. Characters who used to be enemies can become friends. The villain can be the hero. A background character can take center stage.
I love it all!

I write both. Fanfcition, because I like to see what all I can do with the original characters while still keeping them in character as much as possible, and figuring out their reactions when another character is added.
Original stories, because I've got a lot of weird ideas, and if I don't do something with them, I'm afraid that they'll fester and I'll go crazy XD Plus it's just something that I enjoy doing smile

Writing Fanfiction is definitely a good way to expend energy from being on a hype and loving the fandom so much! One reason I do it.
Pairing people up who aren't normally paired or Making them do something they normally wouldn't is also a fun reason.
I am also a fluff writer usually so writing my own love story or something just plain cute is a good way to make me feel better. xD

I write fanfictions for several reasons:
-for one, obviously the fandom. I have a very select few shows/books/etc. that I will write fanfiction about, but when I do, it's a doozy.
-The characters in a show are already made out for me to view over and over again. I can think of their motives of why they do what they do, and I get to know the character. I have tried writing original fiction a couple of times, but I quickly gave up. I don't want to be an author for a living, so I just choose fanfiction as a hobby (:
-The possibilities are endless! Since you get to know a character, you can't help but imagine what this character would do if they was in a certain situation. Or "Oh, they would look so cute together."
-It's a rare hobby. At least in my neck of the woods, it is. Nobody in my personal life knows I write fanfiction. Not my husband, or even my mother. I kind of enjoy the secret. heart
-It's just simply something I truly enjoy and it has become a part of me. I started when I was 12 and I'm now 25, turning 26 in a few months.

I write fan fiction for the same reason as many others: the fandom. I would get these ideas in my head, and if I like it, I start the writing process by first coming up with a mental outline. Some of the ideas just come to me, others come through inspiration.
The first fan fiction I wrote was a Naruto one that I wrote in 2006. It kinda sucks when I look at it nowadays. It's three pages when typed, and it only shows me how little I knew about the series at the time when I read it again.
Right now, I'm trying to work on a Pokémon fan fiction. I'm stuck on which characters to use besides Ash, Pikachu, and Brock, but so far, I've been getting some help in another forum. Here's the forum if you're interested. The (brief) summary is in the first post.

Well, in terms of writing original stuff, I think my poetry is pretty decent. And other than that, I generally don't write stories. I feel like there's a better medium out there for me to convey my original ideas than writing... to be honest, I don't really like writing (I tried to avoid essay-type courses like the plague in university; project-type courses were much more to my preference).
Why do I write fanfiction? It's fun (even if it means I have to write!). I like to expand on ideas from canon, take things in different directions, and share my ideas with the fandom. It's a creative outlet. And I'm inspired by different fandoms to explore "what if?" scenarios.
A lot of the stuff I write is for "dead" canons, in that the canon is complete and not continuing any further. This makes it easier to take my time with the writing, since something new in canon that could totally change or negate the entire premise of my story won't happen. There are a few "live" canons I'm planning on writing for, and I'll probably end up specifying a time-period for those when posting the story, since by the time I do, it'll probably need to be set in one. Well, there's one I can think of that I think I'll be able to get away with even if I post it a year or two from now, since I'm setting it in the future and the canon is crawling along at a snail's pace (and always has crawled along at a snail's pace), it'll be quite a long while before it gets to that point.
But yeah, it's fun to see what would happen if I took the character(s) in a certain direction. It's interesting and exciting (especially if well-written... and I do aim to do my best to write it well, and as much in-character as possible; I'll review a ton of canon if I have to to make sure I'm keeping characters in-character). Ah, and I'm not talking romance here, really. I haven't written a romance story in years, and most of what I'm aiming to write isn't romance either. I'm more interested in seeing how the characters interact in other, non-romantic scenarios. Maybe it's 'cause I'm doing my best to stick to canon, and canon for most of my stories doesn't focus on romance (though, there may be a touch of romance in the background).
