There are always those characters in stories that appear really really interesting, or have the potential to be really interesting, but for whatever reason the author just doesn't spend all that much time on them. We are left with only hints about them and have to fill in the blanks with our own imaginations. I think these are the most interesting characters to read fan fictions about. How about you?

I tend to end up at least being intrigued by the characters that get dumped on or ignored by their authors, probably because those character are often portrayed as one note, but hint at more development that never comes.
Which is also kind of the problem when it comes to fanworks. It leaves too much room for interpretation and there are going to be many different and sometimes conflicting takes on the character. Which can lead to bias and immaturity from some people.
Off the top of my head I can think of two characters that fit the bill. Ruffnut from How to Train Your Dragon. She was nuanced enough in the movie that she was easily distinguished from her twin, but then the tv series just kind of lumped them together. She did get one episode to develop her character, but Tuffnut got a lot more lines, screen time, and two and a half episodes.
The other character is a bit more of a hot button for me, because it's a case of either didn't read the source material or didn't understand the source material for my favorite classical work. Considering he is part of a franchise that exists solely to sell dolls, I'm going with "they watched The Nutty Professor and called it a day."
Seriously, if you are going to make a literal Jekyll and Hyde character you could at least read the ******** short story first, Mattel! The part that really pisses me off, is that Jackson's doll characterization is really good and layered, like it should be, but he's reduced to a basic 80's nerd stereotype in the web series and movies, if he even shows up. And there is so much that could be done with him. They can't even get which parent is which straight. There are so many paths they could take with him and we get...nothing. (At least they didn't spell his name with an X.)
But then, he is a boy character and Mattel seems to not think much of their male characters. So, I guess you could include all the male Monster/Ever After High male characters as under sung. They often get the short end of the stick plot wise and their development has been circling the drain since "season" two.
But then, this is only the rather large tip of the iceberg for me when it comes to MH. I could go on for hours about how much that series disappoints. So much potential squandered. The dolls are adorable though.
Sorry for the rant. As noted, it's a hot button.
