LibreOffice

Its the free software fanfiction.net has linked on their first page. I've never tried it myself, but I've just downloaded it and was wondering if any of you have tired it yet and what you think. I'm gonna give it a go as soon as it's done downloading and see how it compares to other word programs that I've used. I figure, even if it's not as great as others, its free. So I can't really go wrong.

Well, as it turns out, even though I downloaded the one specifically for Mac OS X, its not actually compatible with Mac. So, looks like I can't try it afterall.

I just downloaded it and gave it a try. So far it's as user friendly as Microsoft Word and more user friendly than AbiWord. The layout is reminiscent of Microsoft's program though it isn't all pretty and polished. It has a built-in spellchecker, grammar check, many font sizes, paragraph formatting options, and, as stated earlier, it's easy to use. So far so good! I'll post if/when I submit a document into FFnet and tell you if things go awry in the format.

My gosh... Why am I still awake? Oh, that's right! I just posted a new story chapter! The good news is that you can click "Save As" in LibreOffice and convert the .odt file into a .docx file without having to go to a secondary file conversion site. So hooray for not having to skulk around shady websites! This will allow you to easily upload your document into FFnet and your formatting won't be obliterated in the slightest. Done and done.

That is a very useful feature.

Okay, I have another update. When LibreOffice prompts you to update the document writer: DO IT! Really, do it right then and there. If you don't, you could potentially end up locked out of all of your LibreOffice documents. It may just be a glitch though- since it only locked me out for about a day- but it was still very annoying and made me panic. sweatdrop

I downloaded it because FF.net said it's more compatible. But is it really? Are there any huge differences? I've been using MS Word for my entire life -- it just seems weird to use anything else. Mostly since LibreOffice isn't as slick/smooth as MS Word

I've used MS Word my entire life as well and the transition isn't really all that hard. LibreOffice isn't nearly as pretty but you can convert your files into practically every format you can think of and it works just as well as MS Word. I did, however, find one quirk. If you italicize some words that are sandwiched between regular text and upload it to FFnet, the document writer in FFnet will get rid of the spaces between the regular words and the italicized word. So it ends up looking something like this:

"I knew that I would find hersomewhereout in the forest."

That's really the only bad thing that I've found and it's little more than an annoyance. Oh, that and sometimes you'll get locked out of LibreOffice which I mentioned in a previous post... I think. So far it only happened the one time, so it may have been a glitch.
