❝A long winding road with lots of ponds and tall grass....❞

Route 3 is a route in southeastern Unova. It connects Striaton City to Nacrene City, while also providing access to Wellspring Cave. The daycare can also be accessed on this route. Route 3 starts off with a short simple path to the north after exiting Striaton City. Straight ahead is the Pokémon Day Care and a school where several Preschoolers can be found. Traveling westwards brings travelers to find two separate paths; a patch of tall grass is located to the north of this path. Wellspring Cave can be found to the west. Traveling southwards, and then once again, westwards leads to the bridge to Nacrene City.

Aysel awoke to the feeling of being poked in the face multiple times by a carefully used claw. Used to this awakening, she batted the paw away gently and lifted herself up into a sitting position on her bed. Shaking out her white hair, she tried her best to smooth the wild mess down. Frowning when it wouldn't cooperate, but more than accustomed to it, Aysel got up off her bed and reached up to pat her alarm clock; otherwise known as Typhlo the Typhlosion. They were quite the pair, Aysel being more than a full foot and a half shorter than her taller than average Typhlosion. He was on the larger scale, standing a solid seven feet tall when most Typhlosion top out around five feet seven inches.

Typhlo made a happy noise at the affection, and followed her around the room as she gathered her things to exit her room. Humming to herself, she seemingly danced around the room, but not in a beautiful way. Her movements were odd and sporatic, and almost impossible to predict. It was eye catching but not in a positive manner. Aysel made her bed, and then opened her door and walked out.

Having grown used his trainer's antics, Typhlo only watched giddily from where he was standing and followed her out the door when she was done. Her parents were in the kitchen, looking at her apprehensively as she entered the room. Aysel rolled her eyes, but let her mother speak first, "Honey, are you sure you want to do this? You can just put it off another year.."

Aysel interrupted her there and rebutted, "Mom, dad, I've put this off for four years. I can't just keep training around the house. I want to see the world, and have my own adventures."

Her father took his turn trying to convince her, "We know, but at the same time we don't want to see you get hurt again."

The albino girl gave a frustrated sigh. She knew that her parents were just worried about her safety, but she had to leave the nest sometime. Knowing that the only way that she would get through to them was if she made sure they understood she meant it she spoke again, but this time it was warped, yet full of passion, "Venture forth must I, your grip you must release from me. I love you both, but grow must I."

Aysel then hugged them both, Typhlo watching from the door that lead out of the house. When she was done with her goodbyes, she walked over to her faithful fire-type and walked through the door. Exiting the house, Aysel noted that it was most definitely not morning anymore. Giving Typhlo a glance she asked, "I thought I told you to wake me up early today?"

Typhlo didn't even look abashed as he answered with a cute tilt of the head, "Rauwr?"

Aysel couldn't help but smile at his antics and reached up to pat him on the head affectionately, "Aw, I can never be mad at you Typhlo."

Leaving the city and walking towards Route 3, Aysel was planning on training her Murkrow, Merc. He was one of her newest recruits, and as such was further behind than the others. He was progressing quickly, and seemed almost battle hungry, but Aysel tried to cap that as much as possible. It worried her sometimes, but she had a pretty good handle on it.

Walking on the path, Aysel noticed a male trainer walking towards her and Typhlo. She smiled and waved at him, shouting when he got close enough, "Hey! Battle, we should! What fun it would be!"

The boy had brown hair and eyes to match looked at her oddly but agreed nonetheless, "Alright, I'm Alex by the way."

Aysel had an excited look on her face as she introduced herself as well as Typhlo. Alex tilted his head up to look at the large Typhlosion and asked rudely, "What are you doing with such a big Pokemon? Aren't little girls supposed to like cute, cuddly Pokemon like Cinccino?"

Aysel made an irritated face, her big ruby red eyes narrowing as she retorted angrily, forgoing her usual odd way of talking, "Typhlo IS cute and cuddly! And I'm fourteen!"

Alex looked surprised to hear it, but didn't continue the argument. Instead he pulled out a Pokeball and introduced, "Come on out, Servine!"

Noting that Alex was looking nervously at Typhlo--who was glaring daggers at Alex for not thinking that he was cute or cuddley--Aysel decided that to be fair to him, she would use a different Pokemon. Thinking that this would be a good battle for Merc, she plucked his pokeball from its spot on her belt and released him with her usual command, "Front and center, Merc!"

The black bird soared into the sky, crying out his name as he flew. He came to hover in front of Aysel the instant he realized that he was to be used in battle. A hard glint of excitement could be seen in his eyes, and he gave another cry, "Krowww! Murkroww!"

Deciding that she would take the first move if Alex wouldn't, she commanded, "Merc, use wing attack!"

Alex was prepared for this, and ordered his Servine, "Use vine whip and grab it!"

Before he could reach his target, Merc was wrapped up in the Servine's vines and was struggling to get free. The Servine brought Merc in closer, and when it did, both Aysel and Merc smirked. The little albino called out, "Merc, use icy wind!"

Merc opened his mouth, and let loose a blast of ice and wind close range on the enemy. The Servine reared back in shock and pain, letting go of Merc just enough for him to escape. The crow Pokemon gave a loud shriek of its name, before Aysel commanded again, "Quick while it's distracted, finish it off with heat wave!"

Aysel knew now was the time if any to use this move. Merc had still not mastered the move, and as such it had to be given more time to use. Merc gathered the red energy in his wings for a few seconds, before giving a powerful and purposeful flap. The attack sent a wave of red hot air and embers towards the just now recovering Servine. Alex, in hopes of having his Pokemon survive the attack directed, "Servine! Block the attack with leaf storm!"

The green snake Pokemon sent out a wave of leaves, but it was no match for the power of Merc's concentrated heat wave attack. The brunt of the attack was absorbed by the leaves however, and the Servine was hit with only about half of the power of the attack. Aysel frowned, as the Servine still was standing.

In a twist of events, the Servine's body was suddenly engulfed in flames and it gave a screech of pain. Aysel's frown turned to a smirk as the little Pokemon fell after the assault of its burn, obviously unable to battle. Merc looked unsatisfied with the victory, but flew to perch on her shoulder regardless. Alex then walked over to her, having already recalled his Servine and grumbled, "It's not fair, I just started my journey."

Despite his grumblings, he handed her 100 Pokedollars, and continued on his way. Turning to Merc, Aysel ran her fingers through his feathers and praised him for a job well done. She then recalled him with the promise of more battles and training later.

Aysel and Typhlo made it to Wellspring Cave in record time, following the path there. Along the way, they came across a few more trainers; none of which were interested in battling upon seeing her fully evolved Typhlosion. Aysel was of course disappointed, but understood that they didn't want to have their Pokemon needlessly harmed. Typhlo took it all in stride, practically preening himself with all the unintentional compliments of his strength.

Upon entering the cave, Aysel was a little creeped out, but pushed on anyways. She had seen on a television program the other day that the Pokemon called Riolu could be found in this cave, and she was determined to have one of her own.

After capturing Aurox, Aysel recalled Happy and walked with Typhlo out of Wellspring Cave and back onto Route 3. She wanted to get Aurox to a Pokemon Center soon, and knew that the only way she was heading to her home town again was if she absolutely had to. Even then, she would either pass through it as quickly as she could, or go around it. So she walked along Route 3 at a meandering pace, using that awkward dancing gait that set her apart from everyone else.

Walking through the waist length grass was sure to have Pokemon try and ambush Aysel, but she wasn't too concerned due to Typhlo's presence. She ran her fingers over the tops of the grass, enjoying the tickling sensation of it.
Soon enough, an angry Lillipup lunged at Aysel with no warning, aiming for her face. In a moment of panic, she screamed in fear, but Typhlo was already acting. His eyes glowed gold and with a cry of rage, he blasted the Lillipup back several yards with a powerful extrasensory attack. The Lillipup was instantly knocked out, and lay in the grass unconscious, but alive.

Aysel was not fairing well either, as she crumpled to her knees and her wide red eyes stared off into the open space before her. Her body was shaking visibly, and Typhlo frowned before sitting down behind her and situating his head on hers. He kept a look out on the surrounding area, while also keeping his trainer warm while she finished her flashbacks.

Typhlo knew that there was no snapping her out of it, and that he would just have to wait until she came to on her own. After about a half hour, Aysel began moving, rubbing at her scar and whimpering. She then began blinking rapidly, and suddenly gasped, taking in large amounts of air. Typhlo moved then, looking over her shoulder to see that her eyes were watery, but she wasn't crying yet. Aysel rubbed at them furiously, and got up quickly. She turned to Typhlo and thanked him quietly with a tight hug, "Thanks again for saving me buddy. I can always count on you."

Orion Wraith

Once Orion exited the gatehouse, he wasted no time in beginning to search for wild pokemon. After walking through the tall grass for a time, with no luck, he decided to try closer to Striaton City. As he crossed the bridge, he stopped to look at the water underneath and watch the basculin swimming around. Taking out his notepad and pencil, he wrote down a few notes. The school beneath the bridge was comprised of a rare mix of Blue and Red Basculin, the two kinds noramlly being hostile to each other. As Orion watched and wrote, he noticed that the Blue Basculin were staying more to the shallows at the ends of the bridges and feeding on something while the Red Basculin hunted more in the deeper water.

Basculin have been known to attack schools of other, differently colored Basculin. What is the reason for this? Is it really simply the difference in color or is it that the color is simply a sign of some other difference? After noting some of the feeding habits of the Red and Blue Basculin on Route 3 I have a hypothesis. It will of course need to be verified by studying other groups of Basculin, but the Blue Basculin, in this body of water at least, tend to eat in the shallows and under cover of the bridge while the Red Basculin tend to eat out in the open in deeper water. This suggests that the Basculin might not only differ in color but also in behaviour as well. Could there be more differences than simply hunting strategies? Perhaps even a difference in reproductive strategy? Depending on the answer that might very well cause an aggressive response if the strategies were at odds with each other.

Closing his notepad after taking his notes and having something to think on for later, Orion got up and was about to move on when a Basculin jumped out of the water and tried to bite him. Throwing himself to the deck, Orion was able to barely dodge the fish, but he doubted it would stop after one attack. Getting up he took out Sylvan's Poke Ball and threw it to the bridge. "Sylvan, front and center." As the Snivy appeared on the bridge, the Basculin, which Orion now saw had a red stripe, jumped out of the water once again. "Vine Whip!" Orion said, ready for it this time.

Instantly Sylvan's leaflets elongated into vines and struck the Basculin in a giant X, knocking it into the water and unconcious. "Alright Sylvan, return for now." Orion said, putting Sylvan back in his Poke Ball and hurrying off the bridge in case the entire school decided to attack. Once he was out of danger from being a victim of a feeding frenzy, Orion continued looking through the tall grass and heading toward Striaton City. After a while, he saw a strange sight in the grass up ahead. A dark blue mound with fire on top of it was in the middle of the grass. As Orion got closer, the dark blue mound stood up to reveal a young girl beneath.

Orion stopped and stared, he had never seen a pokemon like what stood with its back to him now. Taking out his pokedex, he aimed the camera at the strange pokemon. "Typhlosion, the Volcano Pokemon. It attacks using blasts of fire and creates heat shimmers with intense fire to hide itself. It's prior evolution Cyndaquil is a common fire starter in the Johto region." Looking at the average height shown on the screen, Orion's first thought was "That is NOT five foot seven." His next thought was for the girl's safety since, even if this was her Typhlosion, she had been on the ground and underneath the large pokemon for a while.

Walking closer, Orion spoke up so he would be sure to be heard "Hello. Are you alright?"

When Aysel heard a voice addressing her, she turned to him quickly. Taking in his features, she found that he didn't look too threatening. Her walk to him could have been described as a disturbing interpretive dance, without the story. Her motions were impossible to predict, large and arcking, and then small movements with sharp turns. Typhlo followed close behind her, still in his protective mindset. He lifted his lips at the boy, displaying fangs that showed if he tried anything funny that there would be serious consequences.

Only when her sharp movements were a few feet away from the brunette boy did she allow her upper body to seemingly instantly snap forward forcibly into a bow. Just as quickly her head snapped up to look him in the eye, and then she straightened at the same speed. Her dance-like movements just stopped, and all that was left was what looked like a nervous twitching as she held out a hand with twidling fingers, "Aysel is fine, and Typhlo that is. We say hello."

Glancing back at Typhlo and seeing his threatening posture, she leaned back to scratch under his chin and chided, "I know you're still worried but lighten up, he's just a trainer."

Orion's first thought as he watched the girl dance toward him was "Well, she's an odd Ducklett." That thought was only solidified when she talked and introduced herself and her Typhlosion. Orion was a tad worried that she had suffered some sort of head injury and that her Typhlosion had covered her in an attempt to protect his injured trainer. When she spoke perfectly normally to Typhlo though, Orion dismissed the head injury idea. She was just flat out wierd.

Whether she was really alright or not Orion couldn't be sure, but if she didn't want to tell him there was no point in pressing the issue. Deciding to be polite to the strange girl with the white hair, Orion introduced himself. "Well its nice to meet you Aysel. My name is Orion. I'd introduce you to the others but I think Typhlo might eat them if I let them out." Looking at the large fire type pokemon, Orion wanted to ask if they minded if he took some notes on it's behavior. But he'd save asking that for later, a random person they didn't really know asking to take notes about them would probably seem a bit, strange. Even to someone like Aysel.

Aysel couldn't help but snicker at Orion's comment about Typhlo. She knew that the large fire-type wouldn't do anything unless her life was in immediate danger. But she also knew that Typhlo would growl and try to look as intimidating as possible until he trusted Orion well enough. Recalling him into his pokeball wasn't an option that even crossed her mind, Typhlo hadn't been in his pokeball since she had released him in Professor Elm's lab four years ago.

In a bouncing movement, Aysel shifted her weight from foot to foot. She never liked to stay still, and most of the time couldn't help the motions. Deciding to put Orion's mind to ease, if only a little bit, Aysel told him, "It really should be safe, so long as they don't make any sudden movements towards me."

Putting a finger to her chin in thought, Aysel continued, "I would like to battle you. One on one, if you don't mind. Some of my Pokemon are too tuckered out to battle."

As Aysel bounced from foot to foot, she told Orion that letting out his pokemon would be fine so long as they didn't do anything. Looking at the bristling Typhlo, Orion wasn't so sure about that. As such, her next question caught him off gaurd, though it was a normal one for a trainer to ask another. Orion was hesitant at first, considering how odd Aysel was acting and how strong her Typhlosion most likely was. But, training was the whole point he'd come to Route 3 after all. Still looking at Typhlo, Orion answered "Alright. I don't mind a battle, though I'd prefer if he sat out."

Looking back at Aysel, Orion said "I don't mean to sound rude. He would just take out my whole team. I haven't evolved any of them yet." He then took out Panzer's Poke Ball and, keeping the sphere in his hand so she knew he wasn't simply trying to get a type advantage, gestured toward her and said "Lady's first."

Aysel wasn't at all offended that Orion didn't want to battle against Typhlo. She was well aware that she was still around the area that the new trainers were starting out. Typhlo on the other hand, was feeling a strange mix of anger and delight. Anger because he didn't believe that this boy should be telling Aysel which Pokemon she could battle with, and delight because he was scared of him. Typhlo's mouth curled into a vindictive grin, making sure to show as many fangs as possible. This Orion boy needed to know that he was not to do anything to harm his trainer or there would be severe consequences.

Seeing Typhlo's face, Aysel chided once more, "Calm down, Typhlo. If he does anything to hurt me you have my permission to eat him, but not a second sooner."

Aysel laughed to show Orion that she was joking, but Typhlo's grin only got bigger as he stared the boy down.

Noticing that he was waiting for her to release her Pokemon first, Aysel quickly plucked Happy's pokeball from her belt and released him, "Front and center, Happy!"

Giving Orion a mock bow with a large flourish of her hand, Aysel told him, "I believe it is now your turn sir."

Orion's face showed quite clearly what he thought about Aysel's joke, and that he wasn't so sure it was a joke to Typhlo. Orion was surprised to see the gaseous pokemon that Aysel called Happy. Not knowing much about the strange floating head with hands, Orion took out his Pokedex and pointed the camera at it. "Haunter, the Gas Pokemon. It is the evolution of Gastly and is a ghost and posion type."

Putting his Pokedex away, Orion threw Panzer's Poke Ball into the air and said "Come on out Panzer." Once Panzer was released, he looked at the ghost pokemon, smiled a toothy grin, and unsheathed his claws. "Alright then, ghost types are weak to dark attacks, so..." Looking at the Haunter Orion said, "Panzer, we strike hard and fast. Get in close and hit it with Dark Pulse!" Immediately, Panzer charged at Happy and jumped into the air at it while opening his mouth. Dark energy coalesced there before he sent it out as a sphere straight at Happy.

Aysel's mouth formed a smirk when Orion released his Pokemon and struck first. Gears were already turning as she questioned, "Ah that's how you like to play, huh? Happy, why don't we show these guys how a real dark pulse is supposed to look like?"

Happy laughed with delight as he concentrated his own dark energy and sent it forth as a thick black ring around himself. Both attacks hit each other violently, causing a small explosion that blew Happy back a bit due to his lack of weight. Just as the Meowth came to land on its paws, Aysel continued her commands, "Alright Happy, now let's get serious! Sludge wave!"

Orion scowled as Aysel's Haunter countered Panzer's attack with it's own Dark Pulse. The resulting small explosion putt some distance between them but didn't really damage either of the combatants. As Panzer landed back on the ground, Happy sent a wave of purple goo from its mouth directly at him. As the Sludge Wave loomed over Panzer, Orion gave a quick order. "Jump back and use Aerial Ace to go over it!" Following his trainer's orders, Panzer back flipped away from the wave and then jumped over it, heading right toward the enemy Haunter.

As the Meowth cleared the top of the Sludge Wave that was descending where he had been a moment ago, his tail just barely skimming the top, Orion gave a second order. "Get close and use Iron Tail!" As Panzer's Aerial Ace got him close to the gaseous head and hands that was his opponent, he flipped in the air and his tail began to glow as it arced straight at Happy.

As she watched the Meowth jump over Happy's sludge wave attack, Aysel frowned a bit. However, as the Meowth came hurdling towards her Pokemon, she knew that an opportunity had just opened itself up to her. Aysel didn't bother to instruct Happy on how to avoid being damaged; Happy was well trained to know how to dodge all attacks that come head on.

Happy stayed where he was, allowing the Meowth and his trainer to think that they were going to hit him. At the last second he dodged to the left, turning his body to face the direction that the Meowth was falling, and gave a haughty laugh, clapping his hands together jovially.

Aysel took this time to instruct Happy before the Meowth had time to touch the ground, "Happy! Use thunderbolt!"

Orion's scowl only deepened as Aysel's Haunter easily dodged Panzer's attack. "That laugh, is seriously getting on my nerves." As Happy pointed his finger at the descending Panzer's back, Orion knew there was no way his Meowth would be able to dodge the point blank Thunderbolt that was coming. He just had to hope Panzer could take the hit. It only took a split second for the electric attack to cross the short distance between combatants and strike Panzer right above the tail. The Meowth let out a "MROOOW!!" as it was knocked forward by the attack, though it managed to turn in the air and land on it's hind feet while facing Happy. Even so, he skidded several feet, his claws leaving gouges in the dirt, before coming to a complete stop.

It was obvious that Panzer was hurt, he had to be after an attack like that, but looking at him, all one could see was anger as he stared at Happy, bared his fangs, and growled. "Alright, think. A head on attack isn't going to work, he's too maneuverable. We have to make an opening with speed or tactics." Orion thought to himself. Unfortunately, since Panzer was obviously not fast enough to disorientate the Haunter, that left only one option. "Hide using Dig!" Hearing his trainer's command and knowing what he had in mind, Panzer dove into the ground and vanished. Orion knew he'd come up somewhere in the grass, staying hidden until it was time to strike, but even he didn't know where. Pokemon and trainer were trusting the other to do their part without knowing everything, Orion only hoped they were up to the task.

Watching the thunderbolt hit the Meowth, Happy let out another laugh of joy. Aysel couldn't help but smile at the noise, knowing that the Haunter was truly enjoying himself. The cat Pokemon had been sent sliding back several feet, and Aysel felt pride swell in her for Happy. Typhlo let out an amused grunt, signifying he approved of Happy's skill as well.

Orion seemed to have a trick up his sleeve when he told his Pokemon to hide. Both Happy and Aysel glanced around, looking for the Meowth. The white haired trainer gave up after only a moment searching and instructed, "Happy get ready. Charge up a dark pulse!"

Happy's eyes turned dark and his entire body was covered in black energy, and it poured off of him in waves. Diabolical laughter echoed around the area, seemingly coming from within, rather than Happy himself. Fangs barred, Happy waited, poised and ready for the Meowth to reappear.
