Specifically I got her into writing fanfiction. But she's always wanted to write to express herself, but something just stopped her.
Anyway, have any tips I can give her? She's kind of a newbie at writing, so...
Just if you're curious, she has a Gaia. Her username is TwilightGothicGurl. (For the record, I don't like her username.)

For a newbie, I would suggest...
Do NOT:
* Begin passages with "[CHARACTER]'s POV"
* Make long authors notes, or have conversations/arguments with your self in author's notes.
* Beg for reviews.
* Hold a story hostage for reviews.
Do:
* Take disclaimers seriously. They are required for a reason.
* File under the correct category, fandom, genre and character names.
* Respond to reviewers.
* Have fun!

For beginners
Agrees. Do Not:* Don't let a few negative reviews if you get them get to you as you can't please everyone and some people can be jerks.
*Don't forget to preview your documents that you have uploaded because if you didn't format it right it may make reading more difficult in read.
* Don't forget to review your writing a couple times before posting it
Do:
*Try work on drawing in your audience based on the crowd you may be targeting.
* Try to take any feed back good or bad to better yourself as a writer and respond to reviewers.
* Use guides like the one we have here or just ask for advice when needed.
* Enjoy yourself because if you can't have fun writing then your defeating the purpose of writing a fan fic is to have fun.

Here are a few helpful do's and don't's, in my opinion:
Do
o Draft your story first. Have an outline, the general storyline of beginning and end, so you know what you're working towards. It may seem obvious or silly, but when you get writer's block it's easier to know where you're headed.
o Proofread your story. Also have someone else read your draft; someone who isn't going to read it with any bias and won't hold back when it comes to telling you what needs to be fixed.
o Preview your document. Sometimes, if you're posting on FFnet, the document writer will completely obliterate your formatting. Don't blindly post a chapter without going over it first to make sure everything is where it should be.
Don't
o Write off every negative review. Don't do that, really. Even if someone is being a complete cow, they might have some truth in their comment and you don't want to miss out on an opportunity to improve your writing. Take every comment with a grain of salt.
o Fall into a despair if you get negative comments. It's not the end of the world, and just because someone was rude to you it doesn't mean that you have to stoop to their level and be just as nasty. If you do that, other more polite readers might lose respect for you and you might lose respect for yourself. Be courteous even when others are not.
o Let good reviews fluff up your ego. This may sound harsh, but don't fall into complacency just because people say that they like your story or your writing. Always strive to be better because you can and will always improve. I am not, however, saying that you can't feel good about getting positive feedback. That's always a wonderful thing. Just don't let it go to your head. wink
