For some of you, including myself, such a time could've been years ago. For others, the first fanfic you ever wrote could be just weeks old.
Has your writing improved since then? Or has it been generally the same? What was the worst part about it? The best?

It was a ranma 1/2 x yu-gi-oh. I have somewhat still fixing earlier post though editing will still be a pain.

I'm not sure whether or not I should be ashamed of the fact that I'm still working on my first fanfiction. I started it when I was really young. At first it was all about Pokémon, then I gradually added in more fandoms of books and games and shows until it became this giant ADVENTURE thing that I've got in my laptop some ten years later.
I would certainly like to think I've gotten better since the very beginning. emotion_facepalm

First fanfic. Ugh. I only started writing fanfic fairly recently, only about a year, but my first one was a mess. Not a mess grammatically so much, but the plotline was nonexistant, and I feel now that I pretty much tried to emulate all the fanfics I liked, and failed. I think I hate it more because I still have to put up with it because I still haven't finished updating it. I've come along way since in a fairly short time, which is also possibly why I'm frustrated with it. Wow. I used to have an original like that, that I just kept adding onto the world, but now, I don't think that I'd be able to still focus on that one thing anymore. I commend you.

My very first fanfic was for Gundam 00.
Looking back now, it was rather poorly written with a ton of grammatical problems and underdeveloped ideas.
But to my latest fics, I'd like to think I've gotten better.

I wrote my first ever fan fiction back in 2007. It was an Inheritance Cycle story and I am still not finished with it. I would like to go back and finish the story, but I want to finish the stories I am writing now.
My writing has improved significantly! Back then, I wrote for fun. Now, I am a more serious writer after I discovered that writing is one of my passions. A few teachers along the way helped me improve my writing skills and encouraged me to keep writing.
I still write a lot of fan fiction, but I have some original stories that I want to write and hopefully have published.

My first fanfic was back in '03, though it is buried underneath all my other IC pieces, waiting oh so patiently for me to return to it. Poor thing, I should probably slip it some food & water...

My first fanfic was actually kind of brutal. I was in middle school, and it was a Pokemon fanfiction that went nowhere. All that it is was basically Ash and his friends getting electrocuted and dying. No plot whatsoever.
Though the only first fanfic I can distinctly remember was this weird effort for me to write a Zelda story in modern times...Sailor Moon style. Apparently, Link and the sages all got sealed in the Sacred Realm and their powers could only come out of those emblems they passed up in Ocarina of Time, the Hero of Time of the modern era was a chick, every sage had a modern counterpart...it was ugly.
But yeah, I've improved over the years. If my strange little cult of fans says anything about it.

Okay. My first fanfiction was not good, but not the absolute worst it could have been. I wrote it because I was sick of seeing a lot of the same thing in that fandom, as well as several other things that are not good reasons to write a fic. I suppose considering the entire story was just an excuse for me to have my favorite character beat the s**t out of my least favorite character, it could have been a lot worse than it was. (It only happens twice, I restrained myself quite a bit actually.)
The spelling and grammar aren't that great, an actual plot did develop but not until chapter seven, and it's got some really hokey parts, cliche dialogue and lots of quotes from other things. There was also bad characterization and way too many references to other anime.
On the up side there were a couple of chapters that were good, particularly chapter nineteen. I still like the use of song lyrics that implied what the chapter was about for the chapter titles, and there were quite a few original characters that were okay. I still really like the unrelated mini stories that were extras at the end of each chapter.
My writing has improved tremendously, in plot, characterization, and grammar. There is a major leap in quality from that first fic to the next one. But going back and reading parts of it again, I can definitely see potential. I suppose if I wasn't a lazy procrastinator I could easily fix it up into something a heck of a lot better. Get the plot established sooner, truncate a lot of the nonsense that exists only to make the lead character look better, that sort of thing. Oh yeah, and include that missing scene that would have made something that happens later make more sense.
At least a couple of people seemed to have liked it. Especially chapter nineteen. But I did turn the entire Sohma family, Kazuma and Tohru sort of included, into a "multi-centurial band of superheros"(review quote) who defended their city from the gremlin like personifications of their own negativity. So it was a pretty cool chapter and not something one often sees from a Fruits Basket fanfic.

Yeah I remember mines. I think it was Inuyasha related that I wrote in the 9th grade or something. The obligatory girl from their timeline makes her way to Kagome's timeline and falls in love with Sesshomaru and all that junk. I still have the notebook(s) that I wrote it down on. It's good for a laugh about how I used to write then when I read them over. But if it wasn't for that I would not have gotten better.
I think the only good part about my first fanfiction is that I finished it. Nowadays emotion_awesome

Gods, my first fanfic...I started it probably the beginning of this year and it was a Wolves of the Beyond fanfic.
It still isn't completed and I don't know if I will get around to completing it....
It's awful, honestly.
I'd rather not talk about it....

Oh dear god...the first fanfiction I EVER wrote was a crossover fic in 2002: InuYahsa x Trigun.
My cousin and I were hanging out for the weekend, and for one reason or another we just started writing it out...that one was soooo messed up.
Vash ran into the well house, thinking he smelled donuts, and tripped down the well...and since there was a jewel shard embedded in his arm, it took him through...
Yeah......it was bad...
