Ah, titles. I cannot emphasize how important it is to have an appropriate title for a fanfic. It can be the difference between two readers and two hundred.
Here are some tips on how to name your fanfiction:
*This information has been gathered from various sources. All credit goes to the original creators.*

Quote:
Good titles are always spelled and punctuated correctly.

This one is just common sense. Also, avoid using different characters for letters, for example, the @ sign for 'a'. No one wants to decipher a code in the title (unless it's a symbolic code or something of the sort)

Quote:
Sometimes, song titles aren't the greatest titles for a fanfic.

Fanfics based off of songs are pretty popular nowadays, but sometimes naming a fanfic with a song title can be a huge mistake. For instance, let's say you choose a song, but you don't understand the context. The meaning of the song is an important factor as well, so if you can't grasp the message, I recommend you don't use it. But if the song holds meaning for you, then go ahead.

Quote:
Avoid something that sounds too cliche.

I suppose some titles were once so popular that they became so overused that they became undesirable. I highly recommend that you avoid these types of titles. For example, "When Good and Evil Collide" or something including the word 'destiny'.

Quote:
If using alliterations, be cautious.

Sometimes, alliterations can be very catchy and usually stick in people's memories. (like 'busy bee' or 'bad boy') But when using them as a title, they can come out a bit shabby. Be wary of what you're using.

Have any more tips? If so, feel free to post them in this thread.

I'd also like to add...

Keep it simple: Short, easy to remember titles are best and more likely to real in more readers.

Try to avoid over-usage of "the": It just adds clutter to your title. "The Cat and the Dog" vs. "Cat and Dog", which sound more appealing to you?

I try to make sure the title is something that represents either the story on a whole or an important theme within the story.

Except for Deus Ex, that title is because the character that caused the story to be written in first place is named Machina. She may have been the reason for the fic, but interestingly enough it wasn't about her.

Thank you. I fall victim to Cliches all too often.

I am absolutely dreadful when it comes to figuring out titles for anything. Naming my current fanfiction was really hard! Especially since it's not completely finished

If you feel comfortable posting a SHORT summary, I'm sure we'd be willing to suggest some titles for you.

I ended up naming it Retrieval, the summary that is up there now is:
When Team Rocket head honcho, Giovanni, steals Pikachu and Umbreon from Ash Ketchum and Gary Oak, the two must set aside their differences to retrieve their pokemon, and bring down the crime syndicate for good. But their pokemon wont be the only things that will be retrieved on this journey! Palletshipping, rating and summary might change. it's better than it sounds, I promise!

The title you have sounds fine to me. Its short, easy to remember, and sounds relevant to the story. I'd say keep it.

However, I do suggest taking that "its better than it sounds, I promise" out of your summary. Your summary was strong and confident sounding up until then.

I thought it sounded pretty bad.... But I'll change that right away! Thank you so much!

What works for me is creating a title as if I were writing a movie. For anyone who has read my fanfiction stories, I use a lot of John Williams for a soundtrack because I feel that certain chapters and the pieces help my readers visualize what I am writing better- so I go the Indiana Jones route and create a title.

I've just begun using a new technique where I just open the dictionary to a random page and look at the first word I see. If its relevant to the story, I use it. If not I repeat the process as many times as needed.

What kinds of titles do you like. Short, one word titles that express a single theme? Longer titles that ring more like tag-lines? Ironic titles. Amusing titles? Dramatic titles?

I like titles that express the point of the story, or a dramatic title that keeps people till they start readying the story. So a little bit of both. But I can't title something until I start writing it
