I know that traditional bentos do a 4:2:1- 4pts starch, 2pts protein and 1pt veggies- what do you like to do?

Hmm, I don't know how to equate my lunches to the ratio. But, if I had to guess, it'd be equal parts starch and protein to one (or half) part veggies.
4:4:1 or 2:2:.5
I'm going to work harder to work more fruits and veggies in once I start again though. sweatdrop

2:3:1.5.... i think....
(typically the bottom part of the bento is taken up by 1/3-1/2 rice/similar starch (like french fries or sweet potatoes), and 1/2-2/3 protein (if i'm tossing a frozen dinner chicken nugget meal in there, the fries are the 2/3 while nuggets are 1/3)
the top is some sort of vegetable (homemade pickles, raw carrots, etc) and a dessert (candy, hello panda, cookies, etc).
i figure it's balanced enough since my bento is kinda big. :/

I would say about 1/3 is simple carbs, what is left over is split into veggies, protein, and something sweet (such as fruit or a snack size chocolate such a Snickers.) So I really don't know exactly, but my bento is fairly small. I'm a petite person and most of intake is from liquid, such as coffee, slightly sweetened herbal tea, or "green machine."

Since we have gluten/grain issues, I pack really BIG bentos so that I can pack in enough calories for the husband. Veggies (raw ones especially) take up a lot of room compared to the calories they give. sweatdrop
1-2 part dipping sauces and/or dessert (if packing a sweet that day) 4-7 parts fruit and veggies (generally one part or less of fruit) 3-4 parts protein
