Title is pretty self-explanatory.
Of all the fan fictions that you have written. How many of those have you actually finished?
Me, personally, I have about a 50% completion rate when it comes to my fics. However, MOST of those complete stories are One-Shots. Out of my serialized fics ("serialized" here means 'longer than 2 chapters' ) I have completed exactly 3. I have a terrible track-record when it comes to finishing the long-running stories I create.
So, how about the rest of you? What's your track-record with finishing stories like?

Most times, when I come up with an idea for a relatively long fanfic, (generally more than 7+ chapters) I come up with a bunch of one-shots, which puts the long fanfic on hiatus. >.<
The majority of my completed works are one or two shots. But then again, I kind of enjoy the simplicity of just one or two chapters. smile

Well, let's see.
My oneshot fics generally get finished ONCE I start them. That's my biggest problem: I get too many ideas for oneshots that I don't write most of them.
Serial fics almost never get finished - they get turned into oneshot pieces. I just don't have the patience to finish them lately.

There's a finality about one-shots that makes them feel almost 'elegant' to me. They begin and end in one chapter, express an idea, feeling, view, etc. but don't clutter the issue with superfluous sub-plots or Chekov's Guns. As a writer, I do enjoy composing a good one-shot.
However, as a reader, one-shots tend to leave me piqued but unsatisfied, almost always wanting more. Its for this reason that I assume other people have similar feelings about my own one-shots, so I like to try my hand at writing serialized fics too. The thing is... they almost never get finished.
There have also been times when what started off as a one-shot quickly grew into something so large that it just could not be compressed into a single chapter. Then it also becomes either a two-shot, or serialized.

I also take forever to actually get started on writing an idea. I like to give my fics time to stew a little in my head a little before writing. In the past, when I'd start writing something the moment I got the idea, it would morph into something else half-way through and could not be completed. Now I wait and let the idea marinate for a while.

For the longest time, my cousin and I would spend the weekends together, and we would go back and forth writing fanfiction out loud. It was an awesome way to pass the time - and we go so many stories done. I would use a tape recorder and go back after she went home to write them out, editing as needed. Some of the strangest (and longest) crossovers came out of that mess... sweatdrop

To be honest I've never tried one shots. Most my fics only get updated after I do a going over or two of each chapter. Takes to forever really to edit them.

So, you don't post a new chapter until the preceding one has been picked over with a fine toothed comb? Do you mean just proof-reading wise, or do you mean like edited for things like tone and theme? If its the latter, doesn't that cause a disconnect between it and the chapter that then follows it?
Also, you should give one-shots a try. They're actually pretty relaxing.

I'm mean proof reading it till there no major errors so the readers can enjoy the chapter(s) and not cringe every so often at the repeated or obvious errors. I know I have had times i cringe at proof reading parts that I made bad errors due tiredness.

magus_dark_sorcerer I know I have had times i cringe at proof reading parts that I made bad errors due tiredness. There have been times when I cannot read over one of my stories without cringing. Sometimes its so bad I just delete it and pretend it never happened.

I don't post it if it's not complete. That's why there are only three stories up on my FF.N account. Well, I do have an old, old collab account with two one shots on it, but I'm not counting that one.
I have two serialized stories that are done and one one shot. Only one of the serialized stories was really good though, but I've left the other one up just because there were a few things in it that I still like. (by a few things I mean one chapter and a feverdream sequence. The rest is pretty much crap, but it is finished.)

I'd delete it too though if I already posted it before I realize that I kind of can't pretend I didn't. I always put in the disclaimer that its a rough draft likely be replaced as its edited or thats what I do now.

Most, if not all of my rough drafts are edited and then put out on the internet. Very few - like 1 or 2 ideas, make it out of my Word files.
