Have you ever sat back, relaxed, and started reading one of your own stories for no other reason than you just... wanted to? Just for fun, just to enjoy a good story.
I didn't used to. But in the past year, I have come to read my own work for pleasure. Either my writing has improved, or I've lowered my standards of enjoyment.

I do that too! I helps me critique my own work. But sometimes its relaxing when you know exactly how the story is going to end.

Agreed. It is a great way to critique your own work. Not just for types or spelling errors (which always make me cringe with shame when I find them in a published document of mine), but also for things like tone and flow, or overall theme. Its also interesting to read an old fic and compare it to a new one and see not only how your writing has improved, but also how your interests have evolved.

Because you're already in the mood to read something and feel like reading something you wrote. Not with the intention of achieving anything beyond personal enjoyment.

I usually read mine when I don't feel like reading anything else, or when I'm trying to hunt for plot holes/grammar errors.

Finder Alice I usually read mine when I don't feel like reading anything else, or when I'm trying to hunt for plot holes/grammar errors. Its refreshing. It doesn't hurt to read your chapters for fun because if its long enough or you put it down long enough to make sure don't repeat stuff or have story line conflict.

I read my own materials mainly when proofing. Once it done though, i'll read my own work for fun...sadly that is when i find the mistakes...not when i was actually proofing... crying

Once it done though, i'll read my own work for fun...sadly that is when i find the mistakes...not when i was actually proofing... crying I know how that feels. The same thing happens to me all the freaking time. Right now i'm about to post a new chapter to one of my stories...instead of my usual process i'm going sit back and let my head clear so that i can see the mistakes more clearly...hopefully that works and i don't end up with my usual errors.

I do at times as this story is one of the most well thought ones I've ever written which at times inspires me to generate newer and more interesting ideas to build upon.

If I find myself bored, I do. Sometimes I reflect back upon a published work I did and see if there are any errors in spelling and grammar and whatnot. I also do it just because I happen to be proud of one of my stories, so going back to read it makes me happy XD Sometimes it gives me more ideas if that story isn't finished already. 3nodding

I do when I have nothing else to do. Though then I see I made mistakes and I get all freaked out when I see them. (Like OMG how the hell did I make that mistake and not catch it) that type of deal. ^.^ Plus I like reading the reviews that people left me lol.

Yep, I do that on occasion. Sometimes I just want to read something silly, so I'll read Deus Ex and that usually gets a smile out of me. It's weird because it's almost like I forget I wrote it.
Same with Adolescent Boys. I'll get so caught up reading the story I lose track of time. I suppose that's a good thing in a way. If I can't enjoy my own writing than why would anyone else? Though it does irritate me when I notice all the typos I missed.
I only read chapter 19 of Advent because it's the only decent chapter. The rest is complete crap, so it's a good thing I know what went on in it otherwise the good chapter wouldn't make sense. I should really go back and rewrite that story. sweatdrop
