((This is an open RP; other wolves are welcome to join the brothers. Just stick to Daisy Code rules and we should be good. ^-^))
Marduk lengthened his body into a long stretch, attempting to loosen the muscles that had stiffened overnight. He then shook himself, removing the nesting debris from his coat and shivered slightly. He hated the winter; the cold, the snow, the ice, the lack of prey. Everything. And it was chilly this morning. He could smell the fresh snow fall and it made his pelt twitch in irritation.
His red eyes fell upon his grey den mate as he wondered if the other wolf was awake yet. Deciding it didn't matter, he padded quietly out of their temporary den to stretch his legs, warm up and hopefully come across something for them to eat.

As his brother headed for the den entrance, Char lifted his head and snorted. "About time you woke up." He rose easily to his feet, no stretching required, and joined Marduk. "I guess you're hungry. I caught a couple of scents earlier; I'm sure we can find something if you don't scare it off."

Marduk stopped and looked back over his shoulder. Of course Char was awake. The brute never seemed to sleep. The younger wolf snorted back. "You're the one doing all the chatting." Despite his grumpy response, he waited at the den opening, stepping aside to let his brother past. Not that he would ever admit it out loud, but Char was a better tracker than him.
The red and black wolf followed out into the fresh snow, hunkering his head down as a strong wind passed them. "What did you smell?"

Char lightly shoulder blocked his brother as he passed him. "Nothing close enough a little conversation would scare it off, numbskull. You think prey can't smell wolves that close?"
As the strong gust blew through, Char turned his head to it and inhaled deeply. Ah, there was something new.... "Rabbit. Pheasant, though I you know I think it's foolish to waste energy on birds at this time of year. But I'm fairly sure there are deer upwind...the scent's a little stale, but not too old. I should be able to find them."
Personally, if he'd been alone, he'd have gone for the rabbit. Sensible. But Marduk liked bigger game, and Char would bet his breakfast (literally) his brother would want to go for the deer. Oh well. At least the brat is good at hunting them. Marduk had strength, and a certain knack for wrestling down large prey...or other wolves.

Marduk turned his nose to the wind, inhaling like his brother. He could smell the rabbit and pheasant but, his flicked his ear in annoyance, not the deer. He did trust the older wolf's nose to a fault. His mouth began salivating with the mere thought of deer.
His hackles started to raise with excitement. "A rabbit wouldn't go far between us brother. And we haven't had full bellies in a couple weeks." Marduk tried to keep his voice as neutral as possible, but his body betrayed him every time and he had force his feet to be still.

True to form. Char knew it wouldn't be worth the effort to point out that there would be more than one rabbit. Marduk was practically dancing in excitement at the thought of deer. He sighed.
"Knew you'd say that. Fine, this way." Nose to the wind, Char trotted off, gliding over the snow.
It didn't take long at their ground-eating lope to reach a place where deer had recently fed. Here Char dropped his head, nose hovering near the snow.

The younger wolf followed eagerly. He was so excited about the prospect of deer that even the snow wasn't bothering him as much as he followed Char.
When they reach the last scavenging place he too dropped his head to have a sniff. The black and red wolf was careful not to bury his nose, recalling one of last times he got too enthusiastic trying to follow a scent he accidentally corrupted the trail. It took him some time to live that one down and Char was finally letting him within ten feet of the scent trail.
After catching a particularly strong sniff he followed it a little further out of the clearing, only to have his senses assaulted by an awful stench. "Ugh. Don't know what that is...but it isn't deer." He snorted several times in an attempt to rid his nose of the odor. Eyes watering, he returned to the clearing.

Char chuckled internally at the look on his brother's face. He could have told him that side of the clearing was a bad idea...but hey, at least he was learning. Last winter the kid wouldn't have had a clue which end of the clearing was fresher.
"As if your nose wasn't weak enough before. Now you'll be useless...that stuff will muddle anything you smell for hours." An undertone of amusement rippled through his voice, and he worked his way in the general direction of the fresher scent. "I don't know how you didn't smell it as soon as we got--"
Char stopped abruptly, breathing deeply. His ears pricked forward and his body drew up, alert. "It's freshest here...we're getting close." Without looking back to see that Marduk was following, he stalked along the narrow game trail, head low and silent as the snow.

Marduk growled at his brother's amusement. "Well, you could have said something, bones-for-brains. I was focused on the deer scent, if you must know." He moved over to where Char was sniffing, but there was no use in trying himself. The older wolf was right, the scents he took in was certainly muddle by the stench lingering in his nostrils.
Marduk shook his head and pawed at his muzzle, but all thoughts of his twitching nose dissipated when his brother suddenly cut off. Finally, they could continuing moving. He fell in behind his brother, stalking through the snow.

She watched the two from a distance, wondering what they were doing.The sunlight was shining down her pelt, but was still shivering. I better get used to this white blanket of ugghh... whatever this is. she thought bitterly. Maybe they'll help me out! ... Maybe.
Getting up from her little sunning area, the red wolf trotted off the trail she was on and went a father distance away from the two she was recently observing. Yes, she would wait. Until when? She did not know, but she had to make sure whether they were a friend or a foe to her lands before actually showing herself to them.
As of a sign of warning, she left a dead rabbit on the trail and marked her spot. This was her territory and she would either share or fight for it no matter what.

Char caught a glimpse of movement ahead and stalked lower...only to come nose to nose with a dead rabbit. He stopped abruptly, perplexed, and sniffed it. Fresh...and a wolf kill by the smell. A female...why would she abandon her kill?
He stood up, alert, and scanned the trees for another wolf.

She watched from her hiding spot, an abandoned tree burrow. Freezing, she saw the alertness of the stranger and watched with curiosity. Father told me to stand guard no matter what. This is the only place that I could call mine. Sitting down, she waited for the wolf's companion to show up too.

((Acel and I share a computer so there will be times where we just combine our posts. ^-^))
Marduk, not too far behind Char, saw when his brother's movements slowed. Expecting that they were finally upon the deer, the red and black wolf dropped further to the ground, his belly brushing the snow. But he was disappointed when the older wolf suddenly stopped.
Marduk came up even with him and looked down at the rabbit. He gave it a sniff. Smells fine to me... "What bird brain would leave a perfectly good kill here to freeze?"
Char didn't spare a glance at his brother, still scanning the woods. "I'm sure she had a reason...." But we were close, and I didn't hear anything. "It's fresh. She can't be too far." Now he did look--or rather glare--at his little brother. "Try not to do anything stupid until we know what's going on, will you?"
Marduk gave a quick flash of his teeth, but chose not to comment. Instead his lifted his head to peer around. After a moment he huffed. "What does it matter? We probably just scared her off. Our deer are getting further ahead of us..."

Her ears strained to hear what they were saying. All the female was able to catch was "deer". "So that's what they're here for." she muttered under her breath. She knew where they were - near the river of ice.
Getting off of her sitting position, she then headed for the deer. To meet them there. As she was walking her direction though, the snow kept getting in her way. Ugghhh.. this terrible white thing is so annoying! she thought mad because she wasn't going to be able to travel passed here alone. Turning back trail, she walked in the direction the two strangers were. What led her towards them was their odd stink of their fur.

Char shrugged and reluctantly left the rabbit behind, lowering his head and resuming his tracking. It wasn't long until he caught his first glimpse of the herd and stopped, crouching, to let his brother take the lead.
