Down the street from Mount Kimble: E.M.C. High School, about a mile away from the neighborhood, there’s a small bookstore in town. It is called, “Harris’ Bookstore”. Not a lot of the young people like to hang around there. They’d rather go shopping at the mall or see a movie these days. Occasionally, you see a student with a book report or a young tot looking for a new bedtime story. Usually, though, Mr. Harris sees his friends and regular customers, elderly folk such as himself. There is, however, one customer who never leaves. He somehow goes unnoticed, reading in the sitting section by the windows. He is undisturbed and bored with his work. Liam is his name. He is tall with blond hair and blue-grey eyes. He looks around his late teens, early twenties and has a quaint fashion sense. But, one of the most peculiar things about him is his secret. But more on that later. Currently, a teenage girl is walking into the bookstore. She is fair of skin and has dark auburn hair.
“Grandpa?”
Mr. Harris looked up.
“Ahh, Hana.”
“Nice to see you, Grandpa.”
“You too, dear. You don’t come to my shop often. What can I do for you?”
“I’ve just been in the mood for a fairytale lately. Grandma suggested I come here. Can you point me to the fiction section?”
“Sure. It’s right over there.”
“Thanks, Grandpa.”
Hana walked over to the correct part of the bookstore, looking for her favorite author.
”Only one book…” she mumbled.
“Agh, and it looks like someone bought it!” she pouted. Sighing, Hana went to go sit in one of the chairs by the window.
”You’re looking rather down.” commented a young man sitting across from her, leafing through a book. He said it as if he didn’t expect a response.
“Hey! That’s the book I was looking for.”
Liam quickly dropped the book onto the table, looking startled.
“Oh no…You can read it. I was just bummed before that someone beat me to it.” Hana explained with a grin. He looked at her incredulously.
“Are you…” She looked at him questioningly.
”Are you talking to me?”
“Hahah! Of course, silly!”
“Uh, um. Well you can have it. I’ve already read it.” He replied, still wide-eyed.
“Oh? You don’t look like the type to read fairytales.”
“I’m not really but I’ve read all the books in this shop so…”
“Wow! Really? I’m Hana, by the way.” She said with a smile.
“Liam.”
“That’s funny, Liam. I never heard my grandfather mention you. He’s Mr. Harris.”
“Oh. Well, I don’t think he would notice me. I read the books here but I don’t buy them. And I’m fairly quiet.” Liam explained to her.
“Hm. You must have a lot of time on your hands. Don’t you have school or something?”
“Hah, no..” Liam said, dropping eye contact.
“Really?” asked Hana “How old are you?” Liam hesitated.
“20.”
“Oh, so you’re not in college?”
“Nah.”
“Hm. I’m in high school. A senior, 17.”
“Cool.” Said Liam wish a sheepish smile. Hana, feeling rather captivated by his looks, felt her heart flutter at the smile. Wow…He’s pretty cute.
“Um.” Liam shifted under her glance and passed her the book. While passing, their fingers briefly made contact.
“Sheesh! Your hands are freezing!” she said, shocked. He jolted.
“Uh, yeah! I’m just cold-blooded, I guess.”
“You’ve got that right!”
“Hana! Your mom’s here!” called Mr. Harris.
“Oh, okay, Grandpa. It was nice meeting you, Liam!”
“Wait! Will you be back?” he asked her with an urgent look in his eyes.
“Hahah! Of course! I’ll see if I can come back tomorrow.”
“Okay. Bye, Hana.”
“See ya.”
