the plot



Once upon a time, there was a young American doll maker who set up a small business on a corner street in New York City. He was all alone in the huge, impressive city, having immigrated a year ago from England because of poor business. The doll maker had great talent, and he showed it through the various porcelain dolls he made. Many wealthy families came to him and purchased his work. It was a happy time, and the young doll maker was overjoyed by the business he received.

One day, a wealthy young woman entered his shop, having duped her chaperon and stolen off to see the maker's rumored dolls. The doll maker glanced up from his work at the young woman and was stunned. She was beautiful; by her garb, he could tell that she was rich. The way she handled each and every one of his dolls surprised him. That day, the young woman bought a doll from the maker and came again regularly. Slowly, the young woman grew to love the doll maker as well. For a month, this became their ritual. The young woman asked the maker to make a doll especially for her. Of course, it was only natural that the doll maker would consent. Immediately, he set off to work.

Unfortunately, the doll maker couldn't come with any design for his love's doll. He broke doll after doll until shards of glass littered the ground of his shop. Nothing. On a dark and stormy night, a man entered his shop. He was dressed all in black, a cane with a horned snaked head carrying him forward, with a foreboding presence about him. He approached the doll maker and stopped in front of him. Did the doll maker long for the perfect doll? Of course, the maker replied that he did.
From behind his coat pocket, the foreboding man revealed the most beautiful and perfect doll the maker had ever laid eyes on. Did he want the doll? Yes, anything for it. Was he willing to give up everything for it? Yes, definitely. Was he sure? Of course! He just wanted the doll.
The foreboding man grasped his wrist and hurriedly whispered a curse under his breath,

"Doomed to live, doomed to die
doomed to turn his life awry
for the doll's beauty he does cry
and his descendants' fate he will buy.

"Turning and yearning,
their fate will be burning
in glass eyes that are churning
inside with their life stirring.

"Past passes
and descendants come in masses,
only one whose love amasses
for the doll, returned, not lasts.

"Descendant's soul sucked
into the doll, she is shucked,
and her body will be chucked
and doll, to life, will buck.

"Only way to save
is the body so crav'd
until unto another a slave
and descendant's life waiv'd."

Once finished, the foreboding man handed the most beautiful doll over to the maker and revealed himself to be one of the demon lords of Hell. The lord sucked out the maker's soul, leaving him an entirely empty shell, left only with his insatiable love for the young woman and his love. The maker proposed to his love the day he presented her with the doll. Cradling the doll close to her breast, the young woman accepted and they soon married, having children years later.

The most beautiful doll passed down through the family, each of the maker's descendants' souls going straight into the doll. With each life, the doll gained senses and even more life than the last. The only one soul spared was the maker's wife. Finally, the doll more alive than ever, came to life when she passed into the hands of the maker's direct descendant, an outcast teenage girl out of place because of her family's supposed "curse." When the doll comes to life in front of her, the girl can hardly believe her eyes. As they spend time together, the doll and the girl slowly fall in love, as the curse fated them.

Faced with the most difficult situation of her young life, the girl has to choose between saving her own soul and giving her soul up to the doll she loves so she can become fully human.

Blair Wich's room was like no other room anyone had ever seen before. At least, no other girl's room anyone had ever seen. It was something like this, windows framed by long, black curtains meant to keep out the sunshine and walls painted the darkest shade of purple possible without excluding its beautiful brightness. The purple was deep and rich enough to exude a velvety texture and richness. Meanwhile, Blair's walls were plastered with posters and photos (cut out from magazines, of course) of her favorite rock stars and musical artists such as Evanescence (she had the hugest poster of Amy Lee above her bed) and Fall Out Boy (of course, hot Pete Wentz was in front). Unfortunately, she didn't have much furniture, save for her computer desk, a small bookshelf, a TV DVD/VHS player combo, a tiny dresser (she had a big closet, so it didn't matter), and other small furniture, because her family lived on top of the doll shop they owned.

Blair Wich drank in all of this as she opened her bedroom door. Instantly, a veil of serenity shrouded her grumbling thoughts. The poor outcast girl had been tortured that day at school; this time it was because of her name and its eerie similarity to the Blair Witch movie, which she so adoringly loved. Her only best friend crept in behind her, both of them kicking off their shoes in anticipation of feeling the even darker plush purple carpet under their tired feet. Blair's friend, Rachel, jumped onto her bed and reclined there, dropping her Skeleton Animal backpack to the floor and watching Blair.

Blair ran a hand through her straight black hair, a slight headache throbbing at the bases of her temples. "Rachel, I can't wait until I'm out of this hellhole." She gestured in the direction of the school in front of her shut window. "Seriously? This is New York. I shouldn't be treated like this. I just--I just get so tired of it."

Voice cracking, Blair sank down onto the bed beside her friend. Rachel wrapped a comforting arm around her waist and resting her head on her shoulder. It was so rare to see Blair breaking down like this. She was often so quietly strong, rarely showing her emotions to anyone but those closest to her.

"It's okay, sweetie. You know, I feel the exact same way everywhere I go." A bright, insightful smile lit her face. "Say...I know where you'll feel better."

"Rach, I'm not going to another Gothic club. You know what happened the last time my parents caught me sneaking out. I'm not getting my freedom revoked again."

"Ah, sweetie, I wasn't gonna say that. I mean--" That was exactly what Rachel had implied. It severely unnerved Rachel to see Blair like this. "--we could stay here and watch NBC. Tim Burton. You're totally in love with him. What can't he cure?"

Blair shook her head as frustrated tears slipped from her eyes, craving solitude. "No. I just wanna be alone for now." She glanced up at her friend apologetically. "No offense."

Rachel, a little disappointed, reached down and grasped the edge of her backpack with her hand and smiled. "None taken, Blair. If you need to chill, then chill. I'll call you up later and see if you're up for doing anything then. A little treat from me to make you feel better. Huh?"

Smiling wistfully, Blair nodded her approval. The ever-partying Rachel swung her hips in an enticing circle before exiting her room. Then, Blair was alone; the Gothic outcast collapsed onto her comfortable bed, combat boots thunking the floor and tears staining the black comforter.
