Their den by the lake was quiet, the lake was still. Ani headed to the shore, to lie down with her front paws dangling in the water. It was early, the sun had not fully lit up the sky yet. A cool breeze ruffled her lilac and black fur, bringing with it the scent from a nearby pack. She growled softly under her breath...

Conri followed his love to the shore to watch the sunrise, as they often did. He layed down next to her, listening to the forest around them. Off in the distance, he heard the soft rumbling of thunder. He sighed contently, leaning against his Ani and his mind started wandering off, reminiscing/daydreaming . It seemed like forever ago they first met here as pups. Oh how awkward he was! He remembered their first meeting....
(Fade into flashback) Conri was down by the water, as always, chasing butterflies, birds, and anything else that was harmless and moved. Today he had found a duck that he particularly liked following around. He was following it for awhile, quietly stalking it. He decided to start harassing it a little, making quacking noises at it, and when the duck turned around and saw this wolf following, the duck sprinted ahead, running towards the water. Conri broke out into a run, and in his excitement, he tripped over a tree stump, landing face first into the ground. As he got up, he looked up and saw in front of him a violet colored pup looking at him and laughing softly. This was the start of a beautiful friendship between the two. They were always together.
As they reached teen-hood, their parents had begun to feel that things started to get too serious between the two and tried to forbid them from seeing each other. Instead the two decided that they were going to run off together when they were just teens.
The two have been inseparable ever since.

Ani smiles to her mate and leans against him. The thunder made her feel snuggly. She wondered if it would storm later today or tomorrow. There was a certain static in the air that suggested it would.
She pressed her nose into his fur, drowning out the scents in the wind.
It was hard taking care of themselves, especially in the beginning. Niether of them had had much experience hunting, which was usually a pack event. Many hungry nights had passed in those early months, but they survived, of course.
Their mothers had insisted that they should not have puppies... Their own lack of responsibility had created them, and now they expected them to live out their lives without love and not raise a family? They... had done nothing wrong, Anilise and Conri. It was not their fault that they were 'cursed' as their mothers called them! No, it was better that they ran away together. They needed one another, and if the pack was against them, then they didn't need a pack.
Still, there semed to be a problem... they had tried many times to concieve puppies, and as of yet, there had been none. breeding season had come and gone, twice now, and they were still puppiless. It saddened Anilise. It was not fair! Her mother had disobeyed her Goddess openly, and she had been allowed to raise a family, but now she, innocent, was unable?
Lies, all lies!

Conri lay there with his mate, nuzzling her affectionately. He could tell something was on her mind. No doubt about their inability to have pups. This was a frequent thing for his beloved Ani, and himself too, although he tried to hide it to appear strong for Ani.
The only thing that kept Conri and Ani content was the little adopted family they had taken into their den.
That first meeting of Conri and Ani...remember the duck? That was Zephyr. Zephyr kind of became a frequent visitor to the adventures the two of them had growing up, and eventually became a friend to them. Zephyr eventually found himself a mate as well, and when the two ducks had decided to start a family, Ani and Conri had welcomed them to share their extremely large den to keep the ducks safe from harm.
Somewhere in the water Zephyr and his mate were out with their ducklings. Conri heard their soft quacking off in the distance.
He heard more thunder rumbling, this time a bit closer. He loved the sound of thunder, it soothed him and he loved how snuggly Ani got during thunderstorms. He kissed her softly and then laid his head on Ani's back, and closed his eyes.

"Still sleepy, Conri?" she asked him gently. She stared out at the sun breaking above the clouds ahead. She was in a pretty good mood- the breeze had shifted its direction, it now came pretty steadily from the direction of the storm. The happy chirping of the far-off baby ducks had an almost hypnotic effect, and soon her eyes began to droop as well. The sighed and laid her chin on her paws.
Of course, her lack of puppies was almost always on her mind in some way, but she knew that if she focused on it too much, she would go mad. She snuggled closer to Conri, as if to prove to him and to herself that she was happy.
They had discussed a few options to seek help for their problem. The first was to seek the help of a Goddess, but there were some kinks to this option. Most immediately- which Goddess? Both Ani and Conri were mixed-breed wolves, and had no idea who to worship or if the Goddesses would even care to hear the prayers of two mixed wolves. Also, the two temples to the Goddesses were run by the big packs, the main fire and ice packs, notorious for fighting off other wolves at any cost. Surely they would not allow outsiders amid their temples?
No, the second option seemed more likely. There had been some pups learning a rare kind of magic when they had left their pack, maybe they could provide some assistance. They would have to go under the cover of darkness, and hope the pack was still as small and unorganized as it had once been, or risk being driven away from even this option.

Conri lifted his head to reply to her. "No dear, it just feels like a good day to relax." He smiled, and yawned slightly and laid his head back down, pressed against Ani's, nuzzling her.
He drifted off into a light sleep, and was captured in a dream. It was a wonderful dream. He felt so calm and at peace. Just then, the rain started lightly coming down, and a crack of thunder, louder this time, awoke him from his light dream. He woke up feeling happy, very much so, but he couldn't remember why. The dream. It had to be. But what was it about? He laid there frustrated as he tried to remember.
He heard the ducks' quacking heading off into the distance back towards the den. He decided it best for them to follow as well, and he nudged his Ani, stood up, and started heading back towards the den.

Ani nods and leans against her mate, the sounds of him sleeping making her smile. It wasn't long before her eyes fluttered shut too, her ears turning to track the sounds, resting but not quite sleeping.
Her ears tracked the duckies' path toward home, and her eyes snapped open as the first drops of water land on her head and back. She dips her head in agreement as Conri gets up, rising to follow him to the den, nipping playfully at Zephyr's tailfeathers as she ducks inside and out of the rain.
Inside it was warm, the scent of her mate and her 'pack' gave added comfort to Ani. Conri seemed to glow joyfully as he stepped inside, and she puzzled over this for a moment. What could have happened in such a small time of sleep?
She stepped into their favorite corner, plopping down on the gravelly floor and swishing her tail playfully at her mate.

They made it back to their den. Their den was large. It was a decent sized opening when you first stepped in the front and then it narrowed to where it was wide enough for the two of them to walk side by side towards the back. The back of the den opened up into a large open area. There was a small little path that rounded the corner where the ducks had stayed, and the other led into a secluded, semi closed off area where Ani and Conri stayed.
It had been a long morning, and he was happy to find himself back home with his beloved Ani. He smiled warmly at her as she swished her tail at him. He smiled deviously as he bared his teeth at her, growling. He bowed down playfully and then pounced and pinned her down as he nibbled at her neck. He nuzzled her stomach with his nose and then kissed her sweetly. He rolled off of her, letting her up and then he himself plopped himself down on his back, sighing heavily. Just because they hadn't been able to have puppies yet, didn't mean they weren't trying.
