Many people have argued over the fact of the "true" definition of what "anime" means. Some have said, that by true definition "anime" means animation. Some have said, that it's only "Japanese Animation". What is your view on this?
In the forums, here in gaia. The anime forums to be exact. There are certain subforums where certain anime fall into the category. "Anime Series" for those anime who aren't shown on tv. "Tv Anime" for those anime who are shown on tv, and "Animation/Cartoons" where they show different types of cartoons. Well, I've thought about it for a while. I understand seperating Tv shown anime and regular Anime series from eachother to promote less confusion, but what about other shows that fall under the category of "anime meaning animtion". I mean take Code Lyoko for example. It was made in France and it has the style of anime, so therefore it's French anime or French Animation. Although, it falls under the subforum of "Animation/Cartoons" What I'm trying to say here is that Anime to me is more than just "Japanese Animation" because that would be sterotypic. I'm trying to say is that, why should shows like Code Lyoko (Which is shown on tv) fall under the category of Animation/Cartoons? The big picture is what the true defiinition of anime is. Is Code Lyoko put on Animation/Cartoons because gaia creators think or feel that "Anime" means "Japanese Animation"? I'm not trying to bash the creators of Gaia or anything of that sort, I'm just wondering. What are your thoughts?

To me, anime is a distinct form of animation that originated, and still remains, native to Japan. While styles, character and plot designs have been copied from anime and incorporated into American and animation from other countires, the term 'anime', to me, still refers to Japanese animation. I guess what I'm trying to say is that animation isanimation no matter where it comes from, but the term anime is like a subcategory that refers to animation generated in Asiatic countries.

cos other anime it's not that nice.

Ok to help you out it depends on where you are from. In American Anything animated has been given the name Cartoon. In all truth I can call something like Cowboy Bebop a Cartoon and be politically correct though I'll also be burned at the stake by rabid Cowboy Bebop fans. In American, Japanese Animation fan have taken the Japanese way of saying cartoon to mean Japanese animation which is anime. This word is derived from Animetion (Not the French word dessin anime where many people believe the Japanese took the word and it is false) Anime is American means Japanese animation. BUT using the Japanese definition it means all cartoons including the french and Korean works. It is the same way that the Japanese can call all comics and animations manga. It is politically correct to call it thus though most REAL Japanese Otaku (the unhygenic anime freaks from Japan that need to get a real life) get mad at people calling animation manga.

If you use the French term, it refers to Japanese animation. If you use the original Japanese term, it refers to all animation. Generally, it doesn't matter to me which people use. Conversationally, I use anime as a word for Japanese animation. When writing more seriously (such as for a blog or newspaper article) I've refer to it as "Japanese Anime," or "Japanese Animation,". I avoid using "cartoon" at all costs, as it has five or so very different definitions.

Lupine Pyrefly Anime means all animation. But I just use it to refer to Japanese animation. me too.. I mean I know what anime means... just that.. I prefer using it as japanese animations. And I don't like to use cartoon either x_x well.. I do have that on my mail.. but oh well... I'll change it .. someday... when I care XD but actually... it depends on.. who o.o I mean it's kinda official ( I thought/think) that it's for america ... that anime means japanese animation. So.. actually.. I don't know XD!!! but I don't really care about it... because if you say anime most people understand what you are talking about.. 'cept here.. no one knows... they think manga means anime/animation ... - - that is sad.. don't you think? o.o XD!! oh well... I just say anime.. 'cause I'm never wrong.. (as in... it's still animation, right?) besides.. it's shorter... XD!!!

Anime is a style primarily used in Japan, buta few french anime (AKA code lyoko) and english cartoons (AKA Teen Titans) use that style. That's my opinion.

I believe anime should be used as a term to diffrentiate between Japanese style of animation and cartoons which would be American animation but I do recognize its true meaning as all animation.
