Anachronism - Mytha Grenville

User Image

WEAPON Name: Mytha Grenville

Gender: Female

Post Color: #993399

Appearance: Unusually tall and somewhat tanned, Mytha's dark-brown hair is streaked with bright blue and fire-red, and she wears some bizarre mixture of Victorian menswear and popularized punk. Mytha's hair is often tied up and into tight braids or tails, kept well out of the way of her sharp hetero-chromatic eyes: The left is a crimson that matches the red in her hair, the right eye is an ice-blue that similarly matches her blue strands. Fully comfortable wearing her self-modified clothes, Mytha could easily be seen wearing a sleeveless jewel-tone tailcoat and cravat with red-and-black leggings and asymmetric earrings. Though fully capable of dressing down and looking "normal," Mytha moves with a confident, almost arrogant air, as though she's daring others to comment.

WEAPON Form: Mytha's WEAPON form is a kusari-gama, which can be wielded as separated weapons; however, she is a variant, a pair of sickle-blades joined by a length of thick, heavy chain. One blade, which is wielded in Tristan's right hand, is silver metal tinged with blue; a runic etching in a deeper blue, the same color as Mytha's right eye, twines down from the blade and onto the handle, snaking across the length of chain. Halfway across, the etching - twining around the chain - becomes a gradation into a stark red, mirroring the handle and blade of the right head save for being the same color as Mytha's left eye. The weapon weighs about four and a half pounds altogether, although skillful use of momentum negates most of the weight of the blade, and the WEAPON itself can withstand up to a thousand pounds in a standard stress-test.

Personality: Mytha is quiet, and publicly she seems easily-controlled: She nods when appropriate, rarely voices a word of complaint, and seems to let Tristan make the pair's decisions. There is a coolness in her eyes that gives lie to this impression, and while she never initiates confrontations she has no problem with walking right past a person in her way, or simply regarding the speaker until she's able to leave. Mytha has an inner core that very starkly judges Right and Wrong: Shaped by someone she used to love, Mytha's ethics guide her and she can be unmovable about both major matters and things that others may consider minor.

In all regards, Mytha is precise and clear: When she does speak, her intent is obvious, and she dislikes obfuscation or purposeful confusion. As difficult to master as her WEAPON form, Mytha is graceful to the point of disguising just how hard she has to work; she will rarely be found studying or training simply because she does neither where others might find her (at least, when she can help it). Mytha thus keeps odd hours, compared to the others in school, because while not necessarily shy she can feel uneasy amidst crowds. Like the kusari-gama itself, Mytha is difficult to pin down and most are warned off by her distant nature, but she consoles herself that solitude isn't so bad. This is only partially true, but she pretends that she doesn't realize it.

When spoken to by others, Mytha always listens carefully and responds thoughtfully; when engaged in conversation, Mytha can become an engaging if somewhat introverted speaker. The only time she really opens up is during in-class training, and she has a personality that looks for opportunities to help. When it comes to her partner, Mytha uses polite evasions and doesn't criticize him openly, but in private she has no hesitations about correcting him or bringing up new ideas. She feels that Tristan doesn't consider her a prime partner, therefore Myth can't put her trust in Tristan while she's in WEAPON form, so Mytha's WEAPON form is a little unstable. And why does Tristan keep insisting on putting them both in danger? Doesn't he understand that without a WEAPON form, he could easily be seriously hurt?

Background: Mytha's life, for a long time, was simple and happy: Although there were dark times, and although she suffered the little losses that every lifetime holds, for the most part she and her parents were content. Mytha's mother teaches Literature classes at the local community college, and Mytha's father works even now for an agricultural company that sells seeds and produce to farmers and dealers. They were never exactly rich, but - living in the Midwest, surrounded by nature unlike those of cities or suburbs - Mytha grew into a confident, inquisitive young girl.

She'd always had friends, the boys and girls from her community, but she met the person who would change her life when she was but twelve years of age. This was a boy her age, by the name of Seth, who would visit his grandparents every summer. When they met, Mytha was a tomboy, and they spent happy summers splashing through streams or hunting "specimen" plants for Mytha's father.

Then, when Mytha and Seth were fourteen, Seth's grandparents died. The elderly couple went one after another, and they were in no pain; however, Seth's family could not afford to keep the farm, and while his parents took care of the paperwork Seth informed Mytha that he probably wouldn't be coming back. Not just because of his grandparents, but because he was going off to a private school, Shibusen Academy by name. At this school, he said, he'd learn to protect people; and despite his sadness, at his grandparents' death and at having to leave Mytha for good, Seth was obviously excited to go. Mytha, a little sadly but hiding her tears, asked if she could maybe transfer to this school, and Seth shook his head, thinking.

"Well," he said, "maybe someday. If... Well, you'll know if the chance comes up."

Mytha had her first kiss that day, and she still remembers Seth as the smiling boy who waved her a hopeful goodbye.

For a year, Seth wrote to her, although his letters were always somewhat vague; then, abruptly, the letters stopped. Seth's parents contacted Mytha's family and asked if they knew where Seth had gone; he had vanished, apparently without a trace, but Mytha could offer no help. Worried, confused, and most of all helpless, her emotional outburst triggered her first WEAPON transformation, the brilliant light of the change acting almost as a response to Mytha's despair. Soon after, Mytha's scholarship offer arrived in the mail.

She has been at the school now for two years, searching quietly amongst the background for some trace of her friend. Yet she has found no such thing, and was stymied: Seth wouldn't want Mytha to give up, but without some kind of anchor she had no reason to continue at Shibusen.

Mytha gave it one last try, and at a school ball on a moonless night, she stopped to get a glass of punch and locked eyes with a boy named Tristan Fairmont. Mytha doesn't think that he could replace her memory of Seth, but there's something about him that makes her want to try.

Elitism - Tristan Fairmont

TECHNICIAN Name: Tristan Fairmont

Gender: Male

Post Color: #003399

Appearance: Tall, athletic, and a dark blond, Tristan spends most of his time looking cool and apathetic, although there's something in his green eyes that make it seem he has somewhere he'd rather be. Thin eyebrows and an impatient mouth give Tristan the air of entitled nobility, something that he may or may not be aware of but which he would approve of anyway; the exact opposite of modest or humble, he carries himself as he wants to be, like a success. He dresses well, favoring dark tones with highlights of white or blue, and definitely seems like a private-school student; even casual, Tristan looks well put-together, and is personally somewhat careful of his appearance. He wears his hair neat and short-cut, but its slight wave ensures that he almost always looks somewhat wind-mussed, much to his irritation. In repose, however rarely that occurs, his face looses the coolness and the enforced arrogance, making him look much younger and possibly even vulnerable. This, of course, is one of the reasons he keeps to himself.

Personality: Tristan is, politely-put, something of a b*****d. Although capable of being exceptionally pleasant, and always certain to behave around the right people, Tristan is prone to looking down his nose at others... metaphorically-speaking. Speaking in brisk, almost clipped sentences, as though his time is superbly precious, he's also fully capable of intentionally delaying or "misunderstanding" others simply because he can.

Somewhere, incredibly deep inside, Tristan is someone who keenly feels his own shortcomings, throwing himself into his studies and his training to keep his mind off said weaknesses. His pride, and most of his attitude, is a trait of his family, and Tristan would (in all seriousness) risk death than failure or humiliation. Such things cut deeply, although he displays this only through thin lips and a quick exit; because of this aversion to perceived failure, he will sometimes take incredibly unwise actions in an attempt to win the day.

Should one earn his respect, it's almost startling how warm and normal Tristan can be around that one, but he has learned unpleasant past lessons and would rather risk offending others - or isolation - than leave himself open to future pain. When it comes to his partner, Tristan's typical manner is both doubled and subverted: There's something about Mytha that throws him off, her sheer unwillingness to react to his provocations, and it's capable of driving him half to distraction. In private, Tristan might admit that he wants to become a better partner to Mytha, and he knows that it's the only way they'll ever advance... But he's not about to take that chance if he's not 100% sure that she won't just stare him down with those bi-colored eyes.

Background: Tristan comes from a family with a long history with Shibusen: In each generation, for more than a century, there has always been at least one of the blood in attendance at the academy. They will, of course, be happy to share this choice fact with others... Over and over again. In addition to be naturally gifted, they are of considerable worldly wealth, effectively making them the snobbish, upper-crust, blue-blooded stereotypes whose title they cherish immensely.

This made things difficult for a young Tristan, who was born by accident following close on the heels of his four elder brothers. Pushed, as they all were, to excel from an early age, Tristan had initial difficulties with doing so: Prone to tantrums and weakness as a child, he spent most of his time sequestered away, with an endless cycle of doctors, nursemaids, and psychiatrists. His parents tried to do well by him, but they were already in their early fifties by the time that Tristan arrived, and while the doctors called him a "miracle baby" he didn't really feel very blessed. His early ambition, stated at age seven to become a magician, was disparaged until Tristan became reluctant to state any idea not in line with the family's politics.

Tristan learned early one thing: That any real respect in his family would have to come from either business success or glory at Shibusen. Although receiving better-than-average grades, Tristan was easily impatient with school and preferred other activities, so it was off to Shibusen with him. Somewhat high-strung and demanding, it was worried - especially by Tristan himself - that he would fail to find a partner who could match his own wavelength. If he hadn't found a partner, well... Tristan refused to even acknowledge that it could happen, or at least that's what he told himself.

When he met Mytha Grenville, it was attenuation at first sight, although he didn't at that time even know her name.

The Mytha/Tristan Connection - WEAPON and TECHNICIAN

Partnership: In battle, Tristan and Mytha are efficient when they need to be; however, there's always a terse atmosphere surrounding them, one which is rarely banished. At times they can act in unison, as though they had trained together for all of their lives; at other times they're as bad as the greenest rookies, all timing and coordination thrown to the winds as each becomes progressively more frustrated with the other. With a lack of open communication between WEAPON and TECHNICIAN, they will never achieve a level partnership until their suppressed resentments are finally aired aloud.

Despite this, during their moments of unity, both Mytha and Tristan truly shine: Despite the kusari-gama being a weapon reserved only for the most skilled, Tristan is slowly but surely learning to wield the chain and blades with surety and grace. Mytha, for her part, cannot yet fully commit herself to her partnership with Tristan, but she admits that when things work between them, she glimpses the potential of what they could become.

Personal Relationship: Outside of the pair-bond... Well, it's difficult to distinguish between 'Tristan and Mytha as partners' and 'Tristan and Mytha as people who know each other.' Their personalities, at first, seem like polar opposites; however, they're much more alike than even they know, with both being focused, driven, strong-willed individuals, both motivated by some facet of their past.

This, of course, escapes their notice altogether. Their strong personalities mean that they usually butt heads, albeit in different ways; Mytha goes mute and regards Tristan levelly, and Tristan's eyes narrow as his mouth becomes a tight line. It's fairly easy to tell when they're having a 'disagreement,' at which point they shut out all others even if they claim not to care.

Despite their often antagonistic relationship, Mytha and Tristan are paired together, so they spend a lot of time together nonetheless. They're probably in some kind of major denial, as they go out of their way to find each other should one be avoiding them, and they do worry about their partner's welfare (although they'd die before letting the other know). Their mutual desire to be needed, to be seen by someone, means that they fill a void in each other's lives that otherwise goes unnoticed, creating a mixed feeling of comfort and wariness at what they view as "dependency."

Home And Hearth - Living Space/s

Mytha's Place Of Residence

Of course, what with her parents being a number of states away, Mytha can hardly stay at home and commute. When she arrived in Death City, it was after assuring her parents - repeatedly, of course - that she would have no problem finding somewhere to live. Surely the school would make provisions, right?

... Well...

So, shortly after arriving, Mytha spent several long nights sleeping in tucked-away nooks in alleys, or carefully balancing herself amongst the branches of a tree in the park. More often Mytha would sleep during the day, and she'd spend the night walking the city and adjusting to the reality of the life she'd chosen. Given that this was the first sojourn out for a country girl, it was something to think about.

Fortunately, making friends among the local population led to Hostel DC, a place run by a middle-aged couple who once arrived to attend Shibusen themselves. Although they failed to find a partner, they did find each other; Mikael and Esther Ramirez now operate Hostel DC to give other kids like they once were a place to stay. Not exactly rolling in dough, Mytha earns her keep by working as a desk-clerk when she's not attending school; although it's sometimes hard to balance school, missions, and work at the same time, Mytha throws her all into it out of gratitude for the Ramirezs' kindness.

Tristan's Home-Away-From-Home

Tristan resides in an apartment near to the center of Death City, a stone's-throw away from almost anything that could happen. This is less because Tristan appreciates the heartbeat of a city and more because, as his inheritance still belongs to his parents, said parents chose the location. Why? Well, on the one hand, the building is a property belonging to a friend of theirs... You know how these things go... and the Fairmonts got a great deal.

Said "apartment" actually takes up in the entire floor, 17 stories above-ground. It appears like a hotel-suite, which isn't surprising since the building is in fact a hotel: The Golden Moor, Death City location. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen (which Tristan almost never uses), living room, game room, sauna-- And that's not counting the master bedroom, which Tristan inhabits, and its adjoining full-size bathroom. The place is impeccably furnished, but it's also obvious that it was handled by a decorate and not touched since; Tristan only lives in his bedroom and the game-room, which is where he does his homework, relaxes, and occasionally broods.

It's empty and it's obvious, but Tristan's family (and his own considerable pride) won't let him move to a smaller, more practical place. Since being partnered with Mytha (and being somewhat aghast at her living conditions), Tristan has been - fleetingly - considering asking Mytha to move into a guest room.

Memories And... - RP Log

1. IRP - Interesting Combinations : Mytha and Tristan take the Grand Tour.
I think I'll like this place. Except... It seems like there's always somebody wherever you go on campus. I should find someplace quieter around here, if that's possible... It seems like a nice-enough place, though. Can't wait to start training.
Been there, seen that already. But, at least it's over with and we can get down to business. ... Does Mytha really not know anything about SHIBUSEN at all? I guess I'll have to teach her before she makes us both look bad.

2. MRP - Great Singapore Sale Horror : Their first mission, featuring fashion, murder, and pretending-to-be-a-couple.
I killed someone today. I feel as though I should be more bothered by it, but instead it just felt like putting down a wild dog. Is that good or bad? Should I ask Tristan about it? Not like he's ever killed anyone either though, that I know of.
Ugh. Mental note: Don't eat before a mission. I was able to wait until the airport bathroom to void my stomach through my mouth. Must not embarrass self in front of partner, right? Also, consider disguise-kit for Mytha while on missions.
