Chapter 1

“Get back here!” Yells the man “ I want my 30 Palons, you scoundrel!”
“Hey, Finder’s, Keeper’s old man!” yells back Winko.
They run through the ally, shoving anyone through in their path. Towards the end of the ally, a wagon full of stones blocks Winko’s path; he thinks that he’s caught. The man smirks and speeds up to tackle him. Suddenly, Winko here’s someone yell “Look up!” Winko looks up with puzzlement. Then his thoughts go from negative to positive as he looks up and recognizes who it is. He put his arms up in the air, and soon the man sees someone hang over the edge of the left building and yank up Winko to the roof of the building. The man yells, swearing and saying names about street thieves.

His long time friend Menomica was the one who happened to grab Winko at the right time. Menomica is a little older than Winko by a year and a couple of months. When Winko just started learning the ropes of being a thief, Menomica was around to help him. She played the big brother role for him when he didn’t know what to do. She always likes to be tough and never be one of those prissy girls, but her face looks innocent, and soft, and gives you a rough feeling. Her skin is not pale, but an adorable white. She was there when Winko was finally recognized, as a thief by the other robbers in the T.U. She’s his oldest friend. She keeps her reddish- brown colored hair short, and she uses little makeup. She has 3 or 4 earrings on her left ear and a necklace that looks like an upside down green moon. She is dressed in clothes that she cons off women, pretending to a clothes trader; she steals valuables such as glittery necklaces, and colorful armbands, but she really values belts with buckles that she sees as something valuable. She likes somewhat tight fitting shirts and pants that she says must be perfect for making a getaway. Yet she can usually be seen wearing a small V-neck long sleeve shirt, with one sleeve cut off and a fingerless glove on her right hand. Under the shirt is a somewhat tighter and longer shirt with opposite sleeve cut off and the end of the undershirt’s sleeve is a over hand cover. She also always wears a tied cloth around her left wrist, no matter what she wears. She wears the same pants every day as well; one leg trimmed down with just enough to cover her knee, and the other being normal. Lastly she can also be usually be seen wearing a waist cloth dyed in different colors, and which evidently, is a little longer than her trimmed pants leg. Now her attitude is a different story, she is very tomboyish and can put most males in their place with some intimidation. She’s been like this as long as Winko has known her.
“Thanks Menomica, you saved my a** back there,” says Winko as soon as his feet touch the roof floor.
“No Problem Wink, how much you get off that loser?” She asks.
“About 30 palons, and 5 esmos.”
“Damn! You got a nice harvest, now give me those esmos and a coup’ of Palons.”
“Wha’! Have zomens got into your head or something? Why should I give you any money, you make enough money as it is being a con artist!” he says angrily surprised.
“Hey, you be dead meat if I hadn’t yanked you up earlier, you owe me. You’re lucky that I’m not charging more.”
“MANN, fine, here”* he hands her the 5 esmos and 2 palons * “happy now? Are yah!”?
“Only 2 paloms?!” Menomica says, surprised
“Hey you only said a couple!” Winko says in a sarcastic tone.
Menomica fusses and then accepts the money. They hop of the roof unto an awning and onto the street’s cobble stones. They grab the awning of a vender who’s not at his post at the moment and tear it in to half, so they each have some thing to cover up their appearance. They walk through the street for about 15 minutes just watching time go by. Winko decides to grab a bite from one of the street venders.
“Hey, get something cheap for the both of us, don’t waste all of you money now.” Menomica says.
Winko nods and searches for a food vender. He finds a fruit vender who seems to sell at reasonable prices. Winko buys a bag of Luma berries for 5 palons, and then he catches up with Menomica who’s already up the street. Menomica sees him eating some of the berries and nudges him to give her some. He pours some into her hands and as soon as she gets them, she gobs them down.
“Whoa, what’s the rush?” says Winko
“ I’m hungry alright, so get of my back!” shouts Menomica
Winko shakes his head and the two continue to walk up and down the street.
They aren’t noticed by anyone, they aren’t even seen by others, and that’s the way they have been used to for all their lives. Nothing happens, every thing seems to be casual.. An old woman laying on the street, reaches her hand out grabbing Winko’s garment, her other hand is lifted up to him, she begs for money from Winko, but winko just grabs his garment back and turns his head ignoring the old woman. Winko thinks to himself, everybody have different opportunities, you need to earn them or take them. The old hag was too stupid to realize that.
“ This is so frikin' boring” Menomica says
“ Well you got any other plans beside just walking around?”
“No…”
“ Let’s jus’ head back to the T.U, it’s better than doing this all day.”
“ Go back, just back now? Well, that sounds like a swell idea, but it just so happens that we past the T.U about half hour ago Winko!” she responses angrily
“ Hey, take it easy, so what if it’s a half hour of a walk, sheesh, it’s not like we have anything important to do, let ‘s just go”
They begin to back track back to the T.U, seeing all the people they saw a little while earlier.
“What do you think Unombran’s up too, I haven’t seen him all day.” Menomica asks Winko.
“I don’t know, I haven’t seen him all day either” he replies
“ He’s probably tricking some guy out of his cash, or maybe he’s already gotten his pay for to day, I bet he did, he’s one of the best thieves in the T.U. Yah know, I’m actually kinda jealous of him” Winko says

“He is, I admire him for that.” She replies
“Ooooo, sounds like someone has a…Ouch!” he shouts as his emotion goes from joy to pain. Menomica punched him square in the shoulder, and it was just a warning punch. She doesn’t even look at him while she did it. A man lying on the street saw it in confusion not knowing what went on. Menomica makes a fist in the air and glares at him giving him the message to mind his own business. The man looks the other way and the two continue their walk. As Winko rubs his shoulder to sooth the pain, Menomica snickers. He looks at her and shakes his head, wondering why she must always hit so hard. He tries to redirect his attention by looking at the sky and thinking of the past. He often wonders what it would be like if he had parents that were still alive. What if he never knew his friends or the T.U. Would he survived and lived? Is going to be a thief all his life or will he become something else? These are the question that he has found no answer to yet; he wishes that he one day he could get at least a clue about his parents and who they were. He even somtimes wonders if he should even care. in the end he simple just goes one with life saying" if I find the answer, good, if I don't, then whatever, maybe I can ask Galoma if I ever meet her.

“Hey, hey, HEY!” Menomica yells while snapping her figures in his ears.
“Wha’?” Winko says as he makes a quick turn of his head to look at Menomica to see why she is bothering him.
“Look! we're here.” She says
“ Actually were still a few steps fro…. ahh, again with hitting” he says
“ Don’t get smart with me, okay?” Menomica warns Winko in a sarcastic kind of tone.
“We’re here, that’s the main thing. So just get inside”
