Price of Mortality
People started contemplating the repercussions of killing. Those who sought to kill started the Great War. Those who wanted not to kill granted mercy and killed only when they had to. They suffered MUCH more casualties for their compassion. Those who sought to kill were killed by either each others' hands or from the few that were brought down by those who sought not to kill anymore.
The New Way
First off, magic was bound into weapons. And the weapons were granted a conscience to aid the wielder from thoughts of killing others. All weapons were made like this. This was meant to not only create a balance between the meek and smart, and the strong and dim, but to have to excel in both strength and wisdom in order to become a more formidable fighter. Combat is now no longer between fighter to fighter, but instead from one’s skills and weapon to another. Once an opponent has been either disarmed or their weapon is no longer able to be used for combat, the battle is considered over. The weapons are alive, in a sense. All weapons are enchanted in this way. They communicate with whom they choose but usually never anyone other than the owner. They do not speak or use any form of telepathy. They more accurately give you a feeling. Not unlike how you communicate with a household pet. The personality of the weapon is supposed to complement the personality of the owner. Before a weapon is made for someone, they go through a sort of interview with the crafter. This is to give the crafter an idea of what kind of personality would best suit the owner. After the weapon is crafted, the crafter performs what's called an Awakening. This puts the magic into the weapon and “brings it to life”. The weapon's personality grows with the owner and helps him/her in various ways, such as reminders, helping bring things to your attention you would have otherwise overlooked and other such helpful things. The weapon is considered like a companion. Thus after some strenuous combat the owner might withdraw from combat to keep the weapon from receiving too much damage. If a weapon gets broken the weapon can, and does, die. A weapon that is badly damaged needs to be brought to a crafter to repair it. Typically, one person has only one weapon. There are some exceptions.
Dark Rising
From various regions of the world, reports of some sinister beings have been brutally, savagely, and relentlessly killing people and wiping villages and towns. No one knows where these people or their weapons (which were able to kill people) came from. Survivors and some villages yet to feel the wake of their destruction, started to gather a huge army to fight back. But these people were different. They weren’t really people, but instead they were just manifestations emanating from the weapons. And because of this not only could they not be stopped, but they had powers unlike anything anyone had ever seen. The army was wiped away in moments and everyone else was enslaved. The dark ones each took to their own direction and claimed their own territories. They each had their own minions they sent out over their territories to seek out anyone trying to find a safe haven somewhere.
Exodus
A couple of brave minds got together and tried to plan some sort of escape. They determined they would collect some pieces of their world’s heritage by collecting members of different professions, races, skills and customs and secretly managed to sneak them away and they all gathered to the southernmost coastline. Once they have gathered as many refugees as they could, they quickly finished construction of some rafts that would one way or another lead them away from the tyranny of the dark ones. After several weeks of sailing southbound with only uncertainty on their minds, they at last found an archipelago. They landed and found that the islands have various resources of tropical plants and animals. They started over again. They found their haven. They thrived lusciously on these islands and each island was given a leader, kind of like a mayor. They expanded and started society over again worry free. Or so they thought...
Mission to the Land of Reckoning
The civilization was thriving, unfortunately more than what the islands can provide. In response, the leaders of the islands asked some brave volunteers to go on a suicide mission to go back to the mainland and get some supplies. The group of volunteers sailed all the way back to their old home assuming that a swift death would await them if they were caught, which was very likely. But upon arrival, they found that not only were there no signs of the dark ones, but there was no sign of anyone, anywhere. Moss covered the old buildings that were once slave barracks, and the temples for the dark ones were corroded and dilapitated. Where did everyone go? Since they no longer felt pressured into a quick job, they took their time and gathered HUGE stockpiles of food, medicines, and other supplies. They set off back to their island haven and received a hero’s welcome. Skepticism had almost reached its peak as to whether or not they would return.
Bold Decision
The leaders of the islands had a meeting to decide whether or not to go back. Some believed it was a trap, trying to fool them into getting to come out in the open so they could make an example of those who would dare defy them. Some believed that they killed each other in a power-hungry struggle for territory and everyone else got caught in the crossfire. But ultimately, nobody knows. They decided that if anyone decides they want to go back they can, under the condition they had to deny all existence of the islands. After a probationary period of several months, then they could initiate communication with the islands again. Friends, couples, and even families broke apart over those going back and those who stayed. Some people gave a prejudice against those who think its safe in the mainland. Those who chose to go back did so.
Standing on its own Feet
They rebuilt some of their old cities and salvaged what they could of their old civilization. They got civilization on its way to being fully restored. They even, after the probationary period, set up trade routes with the islands to help the economy.
Things are starting to get back to normal…It is here that these lost chapters BEGIN.
