No, it's nothing like Microsofts membership Gold, silver, or bronze do not exist... Everone is freely equal. Add-ons do cost though, but there are free ones too...
Do you own a PS3?

Yeah, as Evelad said PSN (The service Playstation 3 uses to get players online with each other) is free to use. There is no fee for it as long as you can access the internet.
There is all sorts of DLC for it, and some of it is priced. There's also free stuff scattered about too. They're currently doing a two part Santa Costume for free. This week we got the Top and bottoms, next week we get the Hat and Beard and such.
They also put up priced Street Fighter themed costumes for LBP in the store.

I'm just asking now so I don't have to fret about it later. Saving up for a PS3 and my own X-Box [cause dad's addicted to Assassin's Creed and I can never get on it much.]
LBP is going to be my first PS3 game.

good choice although there is a wide selection of games to look into and you can find a lot of free demo downloads in the shop to try the games first ^^ it also gives previews of up-coming games, and its totally to go online as said before it's just certain game add-ons that cost money, that and original games that you can buy these include things like Crash bandicout on PS1 which can be bought as a full game and played whenever.
