Thiis a VERY complicated answer, so bear with me.
The story starts out simple enough: Son of Duke sets out to avenge father's death and ends up becoming the chosen one of some weird prophecy tio same mankind (basic stuff).
The sequels follow this plot, following his son who, through a series of events I won't reveal here (spoilers), ends up leading mankind for a couple thousand years in order to prep them for something really big and REALLY bad thats coming (not sure what yet, haven't finished the series).
The plot itself is relatively simple, as I said, but the books go into a level of detail not often seen in literature (not like descriptions of objects and stuff but practices and language). That and half the dialogue takes place in people's heads (LOTS of thinkin goin on).
It's weird and confusing at times, but it is definitely something worth reading.

the whole series is available in your store's sci-fi section, author is Franf Herbert
as for reading level... kinda high, it's not that the words are hard, it's just the story is complicated and develops at a pace not many people would be used to.
Also, when you read it, don't be surprised to have something happen, and suddenly go "WTF is going on?!" trust me, it'll all make sense... eventually

 I love Dune! I've only read the first book and seen the orginal movie though. crying It still love the movie so I bought for myself for xmas. David Lynch is one of my ultimate fave directors.
