CONFESSIONS OF FANDOM: The X-Files
CONFUSION -
[Washington, 1996]
Me: What is this show?
[Hawaii, 2002]
Me: Now what the hell am I supposed to watch?
SECRECY -
I used to sneak into the living room at night to watch X-Files re-runs on FX right before, and after, my family moved to Hawaii because my mom banned me from watching the show because it was evil or too scary or something lame. I got really use to watching TV with the volume ridiculously low, a talent I still posses. I did this for almost a year.
SHAME -
I am an official fan club member. I know the name of every single episode of a 9 season television show but I've forgotten my own mothers birthday two years in a row. I can't stand CSI, Bones, Alias, or Lost because I feel like they rely to heavily on various things The X-Files brought to the small screen - but why should I even care? My mom told me to throw away my giant X-Files poster when I was packing for college because it had some mold on it. I told her I tossed it but I kept it and am praying it isn't totally gross when I finally get it back.
DEFENSIVENESS -
"You don't like the last two season of the show? Yeah, well, I don't like your face."
ACCEPTANCE -
"I will never have a love exactly like that. That doesn't exist."
LULZ -
I'm not even going to start to share all the inside jokes, laughs, ideas, and let alone friends, this stupid show has spawned into my life. Just know it's a lot.
MISSIONARY WORK -
I talked my Jr. High teachers into playing episodes during art class/after tests. :B
