Christmas had come and gone, but like so much of the past year at August's house, it did so in a whirlwind. Not that the child had been around for a full year, but he had heard stories. People talked about the strangest things around quiet children, and August was always listening.
It was therefore understandable (because of the whole whirlwind thing) that a few of his most highly anticipated gifts had gone unpurchased, but now was as good a time as any to rectify that. August and Chucky, his dad, were on their way to the toy store! The boy had one or two toys on his list, but mostly he wanted one of those Grow-Your-Own-Butterfly kits and a potato clock. It was a good thing there was a kiddie science store right across the street.
"This is it," Chucky announced, placing August on the sidewalk and gesturing toward the toy store. Chucky didn't like holding his son - he didn't like having a son at all - but ever since, well, August's conception, Chucky had been a bit skittish around crowds. It was better to hold the son he didn't want than be blamed for losing him by the rest of his family. He pushed the door to the strange shop open and followed August inside.
The interior was wall-to-wall toys - trains, stuffed animals, board games, robots, tops, blocks. Cashiers and greeters bustled to and fro, pushing carts full of plush creations that seemed to move on their own. Staff members were apparently never in too much of a hurry to greet newcomers, much to Chucky's dismay, but soon the pair had wandered into a quieter section of the store and the man relaxed a bit. August wanted a bear, simply stating, "I'll know," when asked just what sort of bear he wanted. At the moment they were surrounded by bears, and August made a beeline for the nearest shelf, tugging and testing the toys until the right one made itself known.
